Niche addition to Genesis

Hyundai is making a habit on setting its sights on new niches – and nailing them.

The latest is the rear-wheel drive sport coupe segment.

Last year the company unleashed the Genesis sedan on the market and now there’s the Genesis coupe taking aim at another new segment for the Korean company. And again, it’s pretty much on target. A 3.8 GT model is my re-introduction to Hyundai’s fun side.

Sitting still, the car has a strong presence - its lines are flowing, its stance promises power and a no-nonsense attitude.

Large cut-outs in the front fascia facilitate engine breathing and dual exhaust tips are integrated into the rear fascia, giving it a finished look. Big 19-inch wheels fill the well wells and red Brembo brake callipers peek out from behind the spokes.

Climbing in, I settle into a comfortable sport bucket seat and look around the driver-oriented cockpit that’s both attractive and business-like. Everything falls easily to hand, gauges are easy to read at a glance and switches operate with a nice positive feel.

There are concessions to comfort and luxury, like a 10-speaker audio system, heated seats Bluetooth handsfree link and power everything.

Safety measures include a full slate of airbags and active front headrests.

Under the hood is a potent 3.8-litre V6 engine capable of unleashing 306 horses ready to trample any unwary challenger.

Linked to a six-speed manual transmission (you can get a six-speed automatic with sportshift), acceleration is impressive, off the line and in passing and merging.

The transmission works though the gears smoothly and clutch take-up is quick. Sixth gear is not your usual poop-along no-oomph setting - step on the gas to get past slower traffic on the highway, no downshift necessary.

The way this thing corners when the roads get twisty, I begin to believe it may be clairvoyant…it’s so quick to respond it seems I only have to think “turn” and we’re headed around a bend. Even the slightest twitch on the steering wheel brings a response from the front wheels.

GT models use front and rear stabilizers to beef up the sport suspension. Spring rates are stiffer and shock valving modified, all giving the car superb roll control in the corners.

This is a true sports coupe in every way and that may be one of its downsides. The ride can be downright harsh when the road gets bumpy, which isn’t always a good thing in this segment.

My wife suffers in silence while I happily play in the corners, thinking she was enjoying this nearly as much as I was. But when the surface turns to bumps, humps, hollows and holes, she is moved to complain: “This is like riding in a prairie wagon. It’s like there are no springs or shocks at all.”

She’s right. The suspension, which is beautifully set up for high-performance driving, is less friendly on poor roads.

To me, the Genesis coupe’s performance is well worth the tradeoff. So are the smallish back seat and the narrow opening to the roomy trunk.
