Beverly Hills bliss

The magnificent charcoal black metallic 2009 Ferrari F430 Spider attacks the sharp right-hand corner in third gear, cresting the leeward side of Topanga State Park at full song. Neck muscles strain in anticipation of the next curve as the harmonic resonance of pistons and camshafts reverberate off the rock face in glorious accord.

A light touch of the F1-paddle shifter and fourth gear engages just prior to redline. The glass encased V8 engine barks an obedient response, building once again to a climactic crescendo.

A quick left turn is followed by an even faster right and I have just enough time to check the mirror for any signs of flashing lights as I reach for fifth gear on the short uphill sprint to the top.

Reaching the summit, I briefly entertain the idea of selecting sixth, but all thoughts are quickly dashed as I push hard on the brakes and come to an immediate stop - nothing stops the fun of driving an exotic sports car faster than a good old California traffic jam.

Driving the F430 Spider, even in self-absorbed California, is unlike anything I have experienced previously. Young men and women swoon at the sight, while other drivers give a slight nod of the head or a hardy thumbs-up as it passes. Front row parking at even the most lavish hotels and restaurants is all but guaranteed.

Raffles L’Ermitage, Beverly Hills is a favourite stop for Hollywood’s elite. The outward appearance is that of an exclusive condominium rather than a luxury hotel. Twin umbrellas and a large, vanilla coloured canopy are the only markers distinguishing this as a private hideaway for the rich and famous.

Inside the Mobil Five Star, AAA Five Diamonds award winning hotel features 119 elegant rooms and suites. European English Sycamore panels define the spacious guest rooms. All feature maple furniture, plush carpeting and high tech gadgetry in a contemporary Asian style. Bathrooms are equally opulent, with marble vanities and walk-through closets.

Dining at the hotel takes place on the patio, poolside or in the pavilion. Fine dining at JAAN Restaurant is sure to provide the opportunity to mingle with someone special in a secluded, indoor or outdoor setting. In need of a little hands-on healing, Amrita Spa offers a full menu of services from massage to full body treatments on the hotel’s 8th floor.

Beverly Hills is infamous for its lavish surroundings. A short stroll from the hotel, we lunch at Café 360 in the Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive and enjoy dinner later that evening at Villa Blanca restaurant. Not far from the city center, Petersons Automotive Museum provides the perfect setting to celebrate the rich history of the automobile.

The 2009 F430 Spider is propelled by a lightweight V8 that produces a lusty 490 horsepower at 8500 rpm. A bright red wheel-mounted engine start button rouses 343 lb.-ft. of torque (peaking at 5250 rpm). Once engaged, the smile on your face is sure to last as long as the memory of its raspy growl.

Mounted behind the steering wheel, paddle-shifters elevate the drive experience, providing instant feedback and consistent gear changes no matter the speed.

Inside, our F430 Spider is equipped with the optional colour-coordinated stitching and gauge package. Part of the popular Ferrari personalization option, seats are superb, as are ergonomics and climate control settings. Everything you need as driver or passenger is within easy reach.

Dropping the ragtop to let the sun shine in takes a mere 25 seconds. Be prepared, however, to draw a crowd as the carefully choreographed movements of the canvas roof reveal a mechanical ballet worthy of admission.

Returning to Raffles L’Ermitage, Beverly Hills, hotel staff endeavours to carry out a perfectly choreographed shuffling of Jaguars, Bentleys and Porsches. All fell into the web of the Ferrari Spider, however, as the resonance of an Italian V8 arriving curbside is enough to scramble even the most cynical valet attendant to ask for the keys.
