The stuff of fairy tales

Just a little message to the neighbours in my new neighbourhood: I’m not a drug dealer.

Not that I think that any of the people near my new house has given me some odd looks or anything, but I’m just covering my bases.

A few years back I had a visit from the local authorities because of a neighbourhood tip that I ran a grow op. The tip off: the fine new car in the driveway each week.

Funny.

Of course after the move, the first car sitting in my driveway was a spicy orange Porsche Cayenne GTS. An SUV that does not blend into the greys of suburbia, even before being painted in such a brilliant colour.

Let’s just say I’d like to make sure that my nice new friendly neighbours don’t suspect me as something other than an auto reviewer.

It’s a crime however to have a vehicle such as this and not enough wide open road with no speed limits around.

The Cayenne GTS loads a 4.8-litre V8 and a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and willingly hammers out 405 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The requested power goes down to all four wheels quickly.

With the rubber firmly planted to the road the Cayenne feels great, cornering nicely and remains pointed in the right direction thanks to the Porsche Traction Management and Porsche Stability Management.

The other crime for true Porsche enthusiasts is the colour — Nordic Gold Metallic. Very un-Porsche like. Even though they didn’t hate the colour, several of my colleagues poke a bit of at it, saying it looked like I was driving around in a pumpkin … A really fast pumpkin, mind you.

And really, who wouldn’t want to ride in a pumpkin? Cinderella did it. And my daughter says she turned out ok.

And in this pumpkin, you can really ride in style.

Draped in black leather, the Cayenne interior is sharp as ever. Seats are firm but comfy, the view outside is great — even better with the power sunroof - and there are plenty of gadgets that should be expected in a vehicle such as this, although most of them come as options and not standard equipment.

This Cayenne comes with the added universal audio interface for your iPod ($600), Bluetooth phone interface ($950) and even floor mats ($200).

Ok, so the floor mats aren’t really a deal breaker, but other vehicles come with Bluetooth and mp3 connectivity as standard options. Two things that everyone should just expect to be in a vehicle that costs over a hundred large.

Once your mp3 player is hooked up, you can enjoy your favourite tunes playing through the 12-speaker Bose surround sound system and control everything with the steering wheel mounted buttons.

Like Cinderella, the clock struck 12 and I had to hand over the Cayenne, bringing my first days in our new house to a sad close.

If you think it’s a bit strange to become attached to a high-priced vehicle, tell that to my son, who was really upset we didn’t get to keep the Cayenne and still talks about the ‘Orange car’ to this day.

Who cares if this Cayenne looked like a pumpkin?

Who cares if it brings along some funny looks from concerned neighbours.

If they ask, we can all go for a ride.

And who wouldn’t want that.
