Sunshiny family drive

If there were ever a car that could be defined as a “chick magnet”, this is it.

OK we apologize in advance if the term is offensive to our women readers, but one thing is for sure about the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible ... the ladies like it.

And what’s not to like?

The round little runabout has a cutie-pie appeal that can’t be denied.

And then throw in the fact that it’s a convertible as well, and that’s just icing on an already sweet cake.

There haven’t been too many cars that have attracted the attention of moms I’ve met up with at the kid’s school, but several couldn’t help but saying how cute the Beetle was.

Apparently the driver is another story. But hey, it’s not about me.

The tester comes with a shiny silver paint job, dark red retractable roof and a sharp, red interior.

While the front seats provide a decent amount of room for the driver and front passenger, the rear seats are pretty tight for adults — but great for the kids.

Getting them into the back seats is pretty easy thanks to front seats that move forward and lift up in one fluid motion.

Getting the roof into sun worship mode involves twisting a release handle and then pushing the power button found on the centre console.

The only trouble I have with the drop top is getting the kids to agree whether we drive with it up or down. My son always wants it up and my daughter always wants it down — negotiations are always planned out well in advance to keep all the participants happy.

The audio system is simple and easy to manage as well as the climate controls.

Heated seats add some comfort to front passengers on cool days, which can be easily observed on the temperature gauge just above the rear-view mirror.

Once on the road, everyone is happy. The ride is relatively quiet and the performance is adequate as well. The 2.5-litre inline five-cylinder delivers 150 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is transferred to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission complete with sequential shift. Because of the Beetle’s small size, the power seems just about right.

Since the Beetle is a small car, my wife had a tough time finding a place to put her purse. Look no farther than the trunk - it’s next to unusable for most items, but her purse could fit right in the opening.

The Beetle Convertible doesn’t have too many extras to make you say wow, but the fun comes from being able to drive around with the top down on nice days (of which we had very few of this summer).

The attractive package may not have changed much from its inception years ago, but it remains one of the most noticeable cars on the road.

And if the ladies like it, the men will be happy too.
