Summer's pleasure

The trouble with summer is that it's always over way too soon.

Heck, excluding one week in August, we didn't hardly even get one.

Yes, Mother Nature has a cruel sense of humour. Actually, I think she may be a sadist but I probably shouldn't say that too loudly because she could drop a couple feet of snow on the unsuspecting public. Then everyone would just blame me and my big mouth. So, what's a person suppose to do with a Porsche Boxster hanging around for a week? Just like anyone else would do ... I ignore the weather, drop the top and find a road on which to let loose.

And letting loose is easy - the rag top folds away quickly with a quick pull of the roof latch and a push of button ... simple.

And while the Boxster is relatively entry level for the Porsche brand, it still packs a whole lot of fun and performance in a small package.

Boxster comes equipped with a 2.9-litre, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, churning out 255 horsepower and 214 lb.-ft. of torque. While it's not quite as lively as the engine found in the Boxster S, it still packs a punch — allowing the driver to let go a few blood curdling “woohoos”.

Getting power to the rear wheels is the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. While you almost cough up a lung saying it, it's just the German word for a dual-clutch (automatic) transmission.

Power is always available at a moment's notice and some people may even forget that the optional gear selector is $4,660. Ouch!

But if you're willing to pay for a Porsche, what's a few more grand. Right?

Yes, it can get a bit chilly with the wind blowing by, but Porsche also equipped the Boxster with an optional wind screen that fits nicely behind the headrests of the driver and passenger seats.

When not in use, the screen folds up nicely and can be tucked away in either of the two available cargo spaces.

If things get a little too chilly, the power seats equipped with tush toasters will help out. While you are reaching you driving Zen, you will appreciate the optional Bluetooth hands-free interface and you'll be able to tell the people who abruptly disturb you that you will call them back when you're done having your fun.

Think that maybe the Boxster might not be that safe ... think again.

On the performance side, the Boxster comes with Porsche Stability Management, ABS, anti-slip regulation, and active brake differential — all of which should help keep you pointed in the right direction.

Passengers will receive the benefit of Porsche Side Impact Protection, which includes front airbags, side airbags in seats and head airbags that pop out of the doors, plus a rollover bar if things get really out of hand.

While the Boxster is plenty of fun for dear old dad, the kids could not share in my joy since there is only room for two. And neither one wanted to ride in the front trunk.

The only thing that might be less appealing is having a convertible when there's snow on the ground.

Here's hoping Mother Nature just forgets about that this year.

I'm thinking all the way to May.

Just a thought.
