Fusion get some respect

Who would have known I was driving an award winner?

Yes, Motor Trend handed out this year's award for Car of the Year and the Ford Fusion came out on top.

Needless to say I was a bit surprised.

I'm not saying Fusion isn't a good car — far from it — the fact of the matter the Fusion may be the kind of car that signifies just where the auto industry is headed.

I give kudos to Ford for being the lone North American auto maker who didn't ask for a handout from the government and with that kind of resolve, it seems to have come out stronger for it. Sure it could have come out hat in hand and got in line for a share, but Ford didn't. And it garnered a great amount of respect in doing so.

In the Fusion, Ford has a respectable four-door sedan.

Passenger room is more than ample with good room up front and great room in back. The SEL trim packaged Fusion tester comes equipped with cloth seating surfaces with eight-way power driver seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power moon roof and 12-speaker Sony audio system — both come with the Moon & Tunes value package.

Packaged along with this Fusion is the Microsoft Sync system. A hands-free voice activation system that is ... well ... hands free and voice activated.

While the idea of no having to handle my iPod that connects directly to the Fusion, the actual execution can be a pain.

First off, the Sync system doesn't recognize several playlists and tracks on the iPod and even after listening to the suggestion of reloading the iPod with the music it still did not load properly.

Secondly, if you don't 'know' how to find your music with the voice commands, you are pretty much out of luck.

With the kids in the car and the frustration mounting from my trying to get the Sync to figure out what I wanted, my daughter proceeded to exclaim 'Sync, you stink!' And she did so each time we got back in the car.

Cargo space is really good, with a large trunk able to accept most anything and more with the 60/40 split rear seats.

Passengers will feel safe with dual-stage front airbags, front side-seat airbags, and two-row side curtain airbags.

The Fusion packs a decent 2.5-litre inline four cylinder engine, capable of 175 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque and a six-speed automatic transmission. This little engine provides good fuel economy and the transmission does its best to get the Fusion moving, but it does feel a little underpowered.

The Fusion does provide a pleasant ride and handle bumps and ripples of some pretty bad roads. And we've got some bad ones around here.

For a four-door sedan the Fusion does a good job hauling around the family and the gear that has to go along with them.

Even if the kids think one of the features stink.
