Driving in comfort

It seems like a simple statement, but it’s an execution that sometimes doesn’t meet up with the expectation. When you’re a 96th percentile male with a family in tow, few vehicles do.

Of course when one comes around, letting go can be a bit difficult.

Thanks to a hiccup in scheduling, I manage to get a little extra time in the Lexus RX 350 - luxury SUV that allows you to believe personal comfort should be expected and not just dreamed of.

Inside, the RX treats all its passengers to numerous features and functions. With the added Premium Package 2 you get perforated leather seating surfaces, eight-way power front seats with lumbar support, cushion height adjustment and driver seat memory, plus a heating and cooling function for the front seats.

A power moonroof adds some extra light and ventilation, the auto-dimming mirrors (side and rearview) are easy on the eyes at night and the rearview mirror also comes with a compass and built-in monitor for the backup camera.

I you like your tunes, you’ll love the nine-speaker audio system, complete with AM/FM radio, six-disc CD changer, satellite radio and MP3 player capability. Phone fanatics will love being able to chat hands-free with Bluetooth integration.

Passengers enjoy the added comfort of dual-zone automatic climate controls, with a dust, pollen, deodorizing filter and rear seat heater ducts.

There’s plenty of room for everyone as well. With front seats in their optimal comfort positions, the kids had tonnes of room to stretch their legs.

Passengers will also take comfort in knowing the RX 350 is loaded with safety features, including dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, rear seat side airbags and side roll-sensing curtain airbags, and active front headrests with whiplash protection.

Cargo room is large and comes complete with a privacy screen that can be removed for taller and larger items. There are numerous cargo holders throughout the RX as well, including handy door pockets that open for easy access to any items you bring along.

Getting things moving is a 3.5-litre V6 that puts out a decent 275 horsepower and 257 lb.-ft. of torque. Power gets transferred to the all-wheel drive system via a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode.

Power can be a bit hesitant if you are looking for some passing boost, but once it gets online, it moves the RX 350 briskly.

The ride is comfortable and the independent front and rear suspension, complete with front and rear stabilizer bars and coil springs handle all the bumps of the road and keep things smooth for anyone along for the drive.

For a luxury SUV the Lexus RX 350 will keep all that travel inside it happy and comfortable. The only thing that made anyone upset about the RX was having to see it leave the driveway.

I guess comfort really does only last for so long.
