Cayman an island of winter bliss

A glancing look was all I needed know what a gas station attendant was thinking even before he said it.

He paused as I got out of the Porsche Cayman S and proceeded to let me know how odd it was to see a sports car in the thick of winter.

“You sure you should be driving this thing?” he asked.

“I know,” I said. “I must be crazy, then.”

He responded bluntly: “No ... but you wouldn't catch me driving it.”

Now you can take that one of two ways: he wouldn't want to drive it or if he was driving, you'd never be able to catch him.

I'd like to think it was the latter.

Driving around good old Winterpeg in a sports car gets you a few odd looks and everyone who has a chance reminds me there is snow on the ground.

Is that what that white stuff is? Good thing the Cayman is equipped with winter tires or I'd be worried.

OK. So the right kind of rubber helps out, but the fancy-shmancy gadgetry in the form of Porsche Stability Management and Anti-Slip Regulation keep things pointed straight in slippery and snowy conditions.

Being so low to the ground you have to be aware of just how much snow you want to push through and when it comes down to it, nobody goes anywhere when the snow is higher than your doors.

Inevitably, the one question I'm always asked is “How does a six-foot-tall, 200-plus-pound guy fit into such a small car?”

My answer: “Easily.”

Just open the door and slide right into the body-hugging leather seats.

Inside, you'll find all the current amenities a car that costs 89 grand should have. Including Bluetooth phone interface, navigation system, audio system with iPod integration and heated seats.

Safety isn't missed, either, with Porsche Side Impact Protection, front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and head airbags inside the doors.

As with any Porsche, the reason to drive this car is the performance.

Powering the Cayman S is a 3.4-litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine. This mid-engine bad boy hammers out 320 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque and, on a good day, all of it would be tested at a moment’s notice.

Getting power to the rear wheels goes through the seven-speed Porsche Duppelkupplung automatic transmission.

I was able to squeak in a few days where I could let the Cayman loose on the highway. With its wide stance, the Cayman sticks to the road and provides great feedback through the steering wheel. Throwing the Cayman into tight and not-so-tight turns is exhilarating.

Having a two-seater also makes the kids learn a little patience, since only one of them can ride with dad.

While there isn't much room for the family to ride along, there's always room to pick up a friend and inject a little excitement into their life.
