Comfort and friendly CX-7

When one of my favourite vehicles comes to town, it’s like seeing friends who only pass through town for a quick visit. You’re glad they come by, but you’re sad when they leave.

Such is the case with the Mazda CX-7.

This crossover still maintains a great sense of style, both inside and out. It’s curvy, muscular and sporty.

The sportiness starts under the hood, with a 2.5-litre inline four cylinder, which doesn’t sound like much, but this little monster churns out 161 horsepower and 161 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s by no means a rocket, but it can be surprisingly lively. Lay into the gas pedal from a dead stop and the CX-7 moves briskly to the desired speed; and passing on the highway is never a concern with just enough mustard left in reserve.

The five-speed automatic with sport-shift mode gets power to the front-wheel-drive system with no hiccups.

Maybe it was the conditions in which I was driving, but in slippery conditions, I felt like the traction control system wasn’t doing it’s best to keep things pointed in the right direction. That all changed when there was a thick layer of snow on the ground.

As with any vehicle, you get a little tentative on ice where as on snow you don’t.

The CX-7 is surprisingly agile on the roads and around curves. The steering is light and responds quickly, with plenty of feedback to the driver.

Step inside and you’re treated to a luxury package that includes leather seating, eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, Bluetooth connectivity, moonroof and satellite radio.

The cabin is spacious enough for four and a fifth can fit in the back as well, if that person is the same size as my kids or don’t mind being a part of a group hug experiment.

Seats are comfy and provide a good amount of support for all passengers. Leg room is good up front, but can get a bit cramped for larger rear seat occupants.

Even when the prairie temps dropped to “Oh my God” levels, my kids never complained a bit. The heating system kept things toasty warm for them and it was even warmer for me up front, with the heated seats.

Cargo room is great, with more than enough room for your goods. Of course you can never have too much room, so you can always fold down the 60/40 split rear seats when needed.

For a city cruiser, the Mazda CX-7 may be exactly what you’re looking for - plenty of room for the family and all your gear, all the while keeping the price a shade over 30 large.

Must be why I like it so much.
