Family hauler for the rich

Have you ever wanted to take a trip to one of those marine parks where you get to see the amazing dolphins and whales and just wish you could take a ride on one?

Or how about one of those Viking ships?

Of course, try to be in command of one of those you’d have to be named Erik or Thor and have to grow one of those crazy beards. Although, the helmets are pretty cool.

The closest you can get to not getting your feet wet in either situation is the Lincoln MKT. This monster could pass for a great whale or a large boat.

The MKT sits tall off the ground on 20-inch alloy wheels, with a long front grille figuring prominently in the overall design.

Even though the MKT is a large vehicle, it seats only six. The driver and front passenger have ample room, while second-row passengers will enjoy the same comfort. The third row can be a little tight in the width for passengers, but actually getting back there will take some manoeuvring. Those seats are best left for any kids you may have to bring along with you.

With a push of a button, the third-row seats can fold down flat to give you a huge cargo space, with a roll away privacy cover. The only quibble, because of their position, the third-row seat belts get in the way. Even then you have to reach really far into the cargo space to actually grab a hold of the privacy cover.

Hmm ... guess that’s two quibbles.

Any passengers who travel in the MKT will benefit from several features, including leather seats, with heating and ventilation functions up front, a THX surround sound system hooked up to a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, a second-row refrigerator and a power panoramic vista roof. Probably the only this that is actually good that comes with the ‘Vista’ name.

Speaking of Microsoft, the MKT comes with the Sync system which turns your cellphone and mp3 player into handsfree gadgets.

While the function isn’t perfect for the good old iPod, the system really works well with your phone. The only thing missing in this MKT was the optional headrest-mounted dual-screen DVD system.

At just over 64-grand you’d just figure they would throw it in.

Because of the tight rear window you’ll greatly benefit from the nav screen that doubles as a backup camera screen.

Powering the MKT is a powerful V6 twin-turbo combo, called the V6 Ecoboost engine. If ‘eco’ stands for more power, then job well done.

Producing 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, the MKT moves with gusto. Power is transferred though the six-speed automatic transmission to the all-wheel-drive system and turns this whale of a boat into a rocket.

Not sure how much the ‘eco’ part actually saves on fuel, after all, there’s a little leaf beside the Ecoboost name, but at 15.1 litres/100 km, fuel economy is not awful but not great either. For a vehicle of this size I’d expect a number closer to 20 and that would be terrible.

The MKT is not the family mover by any means, but can easily substitute a family van in a pinch. Even if you can seat seven.

But at $63,220 there are few that will justify that kind of coin drop.

Guess I’m not that old yet.
