Opening up to Southern California

There are few places more appropriate in which to drive a convertible than Southern California. The weather is typically sunny, temperatures for the most part vary from warm to hot, and the atmosphere demands you experience it all with the top down.

The 2010 Lexus IS 350C is my companion on a drive from Rancho Palos Verdes to Palm Desert, California. As the crow flies, the distance is only 230 km. But given the unique geography of an area stretching from Pacific Ocean shores to the trickling creeks of the San Andres Fault, the modest expanse appears cosmological in breadth.

Designed for the luxury buyer who desires to cruise in style and push the limit at will, the Lexus IS 350C offers the promise of both.

Performance comes from a 3.5-litre DOHC 24-valve V6. Power is rated as 306 hp at 6,400 rpm, torque as 277 lb.-ft. at 4,800 rpm.

Matched with an ECT-I Automatic Transmission capable of adjusting hydraulic pressure for smoother shifting and able to learn driver habits and respond accordingly, acceleration is certain to draw attention but won’t snap your neck with unplanned velocity. Smooth is the operative word here.

Steering input is driver focused, weighted when you want it on the open road, light when needed for parking or tight manoeuvres. Four-wheel disc brakes provide rapid stops with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist standard.

Smooth also best describes Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, just south of Los Angeles on the Pacific coast.

Residential style accommodations set this property apart from the crowd. Bungalows, suites and casitas, some of which showcase two and three-bedroom proportions with separate living and dining areas, feature subdued colour schemes and natural wood accents.

Terranea Resort is designed to take full advantage of the idyllic Southern California coastal microclimate. A trail hike on Portuguese Bend is the perfect tonic after a long day of travel. Rumour states the shoreline was also the sight of the original Bat Cave from the ’60s TV series. It doesn’t take long to find, as a steady stream of onlookers make their way down to the water’s edge. Everyone agrees it looks less daunting than we remember.

A quick nine holes of golf on the par-3 Links at Terranea and it’s time for dinner. Nelson’s is our stop for the evening, located immediately above the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Named after the character played by Lloyd Bridges in the famed Sea Hunt television series, it serves casual Southern California fare with an excellent selection of local beer and wine. On this particular night, cool breezes coming off the ocean are best enjoyed by a roaring fire in the outdoor fireplace.

The drive from Terranea to Palm Desert takes four hours to complete, partly due to the incessant traffic you experience when driving anywhere near Los Angeles. As we exit the city limits, I find myself letting go of the mayhem and getting whisked into the otherworldly experience that accompanies the drive into Palm Desert.

Wind farms dominate the landscape, every available acre occupied by a churning, apartment-sized power generator. We arrive in Palm Desert just as the sun is setting, ready for the next day’s challenge of driving in the San Andres Fault.

Our residence for the next two nights is Desert Springs, a JW Marriott Resort & Spa. Considered one of the finest resort properties in California, it features luxurious suites and rooms throughout the oasis setting. Recreation includes a world-class 18-hole golf course, full-service spa facilities and glistening pools. A water boat is the best way to navigate the massive property. The evening cruise drops us off at the front door of Ristorante Tuscany as we enjoy a little taste of Italy. Next morning breaks early as we drive away from the city for a San Andres Fault red-jeep tour with Desert Adventures (www.red-jeep.com). Our expert guide demonstrates the essence of off-road driving as she explains the surrounding geography, debunks the myth of this area and takes us into the very heart of the fault.

Sitting in the back of an open-air Jeep, a fresh set of mountain lion tracks is enough to keep my attention focused on the adventure. It’s a geological journey through time I won’t soon forget. Her statement rings true as we leave the San Andres Fault behind, “There is so much more to California than just beautiful people”.
