Accord gets its groove back

Tired of the old sedan? Need a change from looking like everyone else on the road ... and fast?

Look no farther than the Honda Accord Crosstour.

Much like the Accord sedan, the Crosstour adds a hatchback onto an elongated roofline, which gives it a distinct look from most other vehicles on the road.

I’m not sure what it is, but I find the shape of the Crosstour kind of groovy. I guess I don’t mind standing out.

The Crosstour sits on some large aluminum-alloy wheels (18-inchers) and has an athletic stance. It’s has a certain crossover feel without ending up looking like an SUV wannabe.

The only real concern I had with the overall shape is that it’s a bit difficult to see out the heavily-slanted rear window. Thankfully, with the Navigation Package, you get a much needed backup camera.

There’s a decent amount of room inside for the family, with good room for the five-footer and six-footer, and more than enough space for the kids in back.

The leather seats are comfy and supportive, and hug the front seat occupants nicely.

The dual-zone climate controls are a real treat, considering my wife likes to have her side warm enough to bake (add the heated front seats and you might think her side of the car was in the tropics) which means I have to have my side set for wind-chill, just to balance things out.

Having compensated for one source of disagreement, we can still have arguments over the tunes being played in the Crosstour; but, at least we have a good selection - from the in-dash six-disc CD player to the satellite radio and the integrated iPod connection, finding tunes to enjoy won’t be a problem.

Cargo room is pretty good — quite similar to the trunk space in the Accord sedan — and you get a little extra height when the privacy screen’s out of the way.

Rear seats also flip down with the pull of a handle, which is really handy in you find out your cargo is a bit too long to fit the rear space.

Under the floor of the main cargo hold you’ll find another small cargo area that is perfect to contain those pesky grocery items that would otherwise end up rolling around in back. Meanwhile, the precious cargo will be safe with dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

Powered by a 3.5-litre V6, the Crosstour moves briskly with the help of 271 ponies and 254 lb.-ft. of torque getting to the Real Time four-wheel drive system.

Driving highways, the V6 also has the ability to go from six cylinders to four or even to three in order to wring every little km out of each litre. In all, the changes go completely unnoticed.

Drivability is quite good too. The Crosstour steers nicely and the suspension drowns out road imperfections ... and there are a lot of them in my neck of the woods.

The Accord Crosstour may require the average onlooker to take a while getting used to it, but it will likely be a welcome addition to driveways all around the neighbourhood.
