Give buyers in the mid-sized family sedan market four doors, acceptable level of power for pulling away from a stop light and passing, a decent level of amenities to keep occupants comfortable on medium to long trips, and by and large they’re satisfied. The current Magentis is by no means ugly. It’s just customary, blending effortlessly into this segment. There are no character lines to distinguish the exterior and no special trim inside to make it pop out at you. (Joe Duarte/QMI Agency)

Magentis power is delivered by a small (2.7-litre) V6 from Hyundai (Kia’s parent company), and it provides a reasonable launch from a standstill. As it gets higher in the speed range, its power burst is considerably diminished – yes you have plenty to get around that truck on a two-lane country road or to accelerate to highway speeds, but once there, there isn’t much in the reserve tank. The ride in the Magentis is pliant, with most road imperfections soaked up marvellously, and the handling is acceptable – there is noticeable body lean in corners, but the tires seem to hang on past most driver’s limits, and the steering is as direct as you’d probably need it for obstacle avoidance in emergencies. Magentis fuel economy isn't great either – it’s only slightly better than its four-cylinder sibling and about equal to the Accord’s and Camry’s larger V6s – nor is it that much quieter than the 2.4 “four”, although it is considerably smoother. (Joe Duarte/QMI Agency)

The five speed automatic is blessed with paddle shifters for quick downshifts to try and take advantage of the torque, but there is only 184 lb.-ft. of it. By comparison, an Accord V6 (3.5-litre) makes 70 more lb.-ft. and even the Magentis’ four-cylinder engine makes only 15 less. (Joe Duarte/QMI Agency)
