Grocery-getter go-kart

Who doesn’t like a little driving fun now and again?

And what’s better than driving a little car that only needs three letters to send car enthusiasts drooling? GTI … *drool*.

This GTI, though, comes with a little extra surprise for the married with children set ... four doors and a hatch.

Yes! No more trying to squeeze past the front seat into the back. Although I seldom have to worry about that in my household, if you’re going to take other people along for the ride, even little people, that’s where the groans begin.

Even with four doors the Volkswagen Golf GTI is a sharp looking number, highlighted by the optional, and very cool looking, 18-inch Detroit-style alloy wheels. When I see those sharp wheels I don’t think Detroit but, hey, that’s the name.

The window sticker states this is a five-door leather GTI, but when you look inside you’ll only find a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector. The seats are cloth-trimmed with some funky plaid inserts, which the kids thought really cool. But I guess “five-door plaid with leathery extra bits” doesn’t really roll off the tongue.

And I’m not knocking the leather-wrapped steering wheel, either. It’s nice to grab a hold of and the red stitching — featured throughout the cabin — is really sharp as well.

The wheel also comes equipped with audio controls for the six-disc CD changer and integrated satellite radio, plus controls for the Bluetooth handsfree phone system. An in-dash touch screen comes in handy for the co-pilot to use and dual-zone electronic climate controls kept everyone comfy.

Seating positions in front are quite good and in back there’s a decent amount of room for larger occupants.

The cargo room is on the small side, but this is a small car. Besides, there’s enough room for a grocery trip or two, so it isn’t all bad. If you don’t have second-row occupants you can just fold down the 60/40 split rear seats, or you can even fold down the centre arm rest and just use the pass-through - great for those few two-by-fours or skis.

Driver and passenger front airbags, side airbags and side curtain airbags will all help to keep everyone safe in a collision.

The fun really starts under the hood, with a 200 horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine making 207 lb.-ft. of torque. Hooked up to the six-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) the GTI is a rocket. From dead stops to highway passing, the Golf GTI moves quickly and with some authority, and with the added sport suspension, the GTI can dip and dive into corners with plenty of precision. Steering is quick and responsive and with the Electronic Stability Programme working in the background, you can drive with confidence.

It’s the kind of sportiness that puts a smile on my face on many occasions.

Sure it may be small and, at just over $32,000, it’s not cheap by any means, but getting behind the wheel you can see why the GTI means so much.
