Taskmasters rope in a winner with F-350

If a person is going to get roped into the heavy-duty truck market, a 2011 Ford F-350 Super Duty Lariat might just be the pickup to tie them down.

When the test truck from Ford of Canada arrived, my first thought was “migawd it’s big.”

My second though was “where am I going to take this thing.”

The answer is “anywhere I want to!”

If you figure a truck is a truck is a truck, take a closer look at its lines. From the big chrome grille to the big trailer mirrors to the step-up tailgate, everything is in proportion, making the truck appear smaller in pictures than it really is in real life.

Ford has done a lot of work in its drive to stay ahead of the herd.

The Lariat test vehicle carries $17,000 worth of add-ons including the brand new version of the Ford-built 6.7L turbo diesel Power Stroke engine. Lift the hood and you see a mass of plumbing (yes, there is an engine in there) serving the turbo and serving the inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture.

Power gets to all four wheels (if you choose to select 4WD) through a new heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift manual operation. Shifting is smooth and easy, almost sedan-like.

The transmission is designed to get the engine’s 390 horsepower and massive 735 lb.-ft. of torque to the ground earlier. Full torque is on tap at just 1,600 rpm.

Off the line power won’t smoke the tires, but it’s no snail, either, and once it gets rolling, there’s plenty of passing power under your foot.

Previous generations of Power Stroke have been infamous for their prodigious thirst for dinosaur drippings, but the new powertrain has made the Super Duty more thrifty, although the best I could get out of it was right around 15 L/100 km. That’s still a lot better than previous generations. I never had the opportunity to hitch up a trailer, so I can’t comment on the feeding habits of the truck when it’s working hard.

Trailer hauling is made easier by the integrated trailer brake control and the addition of Trailer Sway Control. A rear-view camera built into the tailgate is a big help when hooking up to a trailer.

The optional Stepgate tailgate is a welcome addition for getting into and out of the box which also features a stowable bed extender.

The outside of this truck is great for both the weekend trailer-hauler and every-day work applications.

Once you make the climb inside (which is still a clamber despite the presence of running boards) it’s a pleasant place in which to spend time.

You find all the comforts and conveniences you’d find in a high-end sedan - leather seats (with heat), navigation system, satellite radio, Sync voice-activated systems, 110-volt power inverter, driver information screen and a centre console that has more configurations than I was able to use. Of course seats, windows and mirrors are power activated.

Lariat casts a wide loop in truck circles. I find stops at the diesel pumps generally result in a series of question-and-answer sessions and a lot of “can I look inside” requests.

In truck country, this is an attention-getting pickup.
