Advanced technology on wheels

Silicon Valley is a place where dreams become reality. If you can imagine it, the talent to execute your idea is never more than a short walk or drive away. A hub of technology and free thinkers, names synonymous with our 21st Century life - Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, Microsoft, HP and many more - share real estate and the common goal to make our future extraordinary.

Jaguar is company that for many conjures up images of luxurious automobiles trimmed with fine wood and leather - a cat on the prowl, confident, fit, and graceful. With elegance and poise in equal measure, the 2011 Jaguar XK Convertible is the quintessential car for a drive in sunny northern California. On this perfect day, the melding of technology and exquisite craftsmanship seemed an ideal fit for the collaborative environment of Menlo Park and Palo Alto, California.

Performance for the Jaguar XK Convertible comes in the form of a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. Underfoot and ready to leap are 385 horses (peaking at 6,500 rpm) and 380 lb.-ft. of torque (at 3,500).

Pressing the pulsating start button, I release the cylindrical alloy JaguarDrive Selector from hiding. The knob rises effortlessly towards the palm of my hand, urging me to take control and let the fun begin. Rich, natural wood surrounds the driving compartment with double-stitched leather hugging me close.

Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, Jaguar Sequential Shift provides the option of Drive, Sport, Automatic or Manual shift modes activated by easy-to-use shift paddles located behind the three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel. Gear changes happen in the blink of an eye; the sound of a throaty V8 passing through each successive upshift is the stuff of which legends are made.

Power delivery is smooth as silk, as I experience firsthand leaving the epicentre of tech behind for a few hours to relish in the simple pleasure of sunshine on my forehead, wind in my hair and the lure of an open road with a full tank of premium fuel.

Zero to 100 km/h flashes past in just 5.5 seconds, but it is in the corners where this cat lives to pounce. We take full advantage of a series of switchbacks and high speed straightaways for which northern California is famous. Hours recede into vivid, lasting memory. As the sun sets we leave the road behind, unwinding at California’s newest star attraction on the hotel and resort scene.

Rosewood Sand Hill is one of those rare places that defy description. Located a mere stone’s throw from the busy I-280 highway, it somehow manages to quell the noise as I take up residence on one of the pool lounge chairs. Great design and a thorough understanding of the surrounding geography provide the ideal cocoon for rest and relaxation.

A total of 121 luxury rooms and suites define this unique property. Technology takes center stage in each guestroom. My comfortable surroundings exude warmth with a large couch and gas fireplace in the living room, king-size bed and large LCD TV in the master bedroom, plus a marble bathroom with oversized shower, deep soaking tub and double sinks.

A short walk from my room, I take up residence for a few hours of pampering at SENSE, a Rosewood Spa. Thirteen treatment rooms provide the ultimate getaway. Personalized services available on the sea and forest inspired spa menu include massage, facials and all methods of pampering.

Recreational activities in the area provide the opportunity to experience the idyllic surroundings at Stanford University Golf Course. Golf pro and Stanford University Teaching Professional Russ Vander Sluis takes me on an 18 hole adventure where young men and women learn the fine art of golf and older wannabees such as me are humbled but still happy to grip it and rip it.

Dinner is served this evening in Madera Restaurant. Here western inspired American cuisine comes prepared in an open kitchen equipped with a wood burning stove, superb wine list and a staff ready for their next great culinary challenge. On this night, the bar and outdoor lounge is packed with locals. Every available seat is occupied by one or more as the casual setting has quickly become the place to see and be seen in Palo Alto.

Whether it is a beautiful car or a new app on an iPhone, a creative environment is essential to making life both fun and productive. Silicon Valley is an inspiring place to visit, but time in the Jaguar XK Convertible proves you can have your technology cake and eat it too!
