Wonder cap for Mercedes E-Class

The look on my grandson’s face said it all.

It’s magic to a youngster’s eyes watching the top of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E550 cabriolet do some cool gyrations as it folds down under the rear deck. The boy’s eyes were like saucers and he couldn’t quit grinning.

I don’t blame him, really. It’s a terrific-looking automobile. I like it when it just sits there…it took a little more action to get Riley’s undivided attention. He ran in to tell grandma and his sister about the “special” car Papa had shown him. About a minute later his sister, Kayley, was at my side saying: “show me. Show me.”

Just 20 seconds to instil a lasting memory for a little boy and girl. Just seven days to instil a similar memory for their grandpa. (Yes they got to ride in it – the rear seats will accommodate child seats and child legs…adult appendages, too, when it comes right down to it.)

The E-Class cabrio (you can also get it in an E350) puts an elegant capper to the E line-up, especially when its sleek look is decked out in some AMG options like aerokit and big alloy wheels.

This is a drop-dead gorgeous drop-top which, of course, looks a heck of a lot better with the drop top dropped.

With the top raised, visibility is hampered, especially to the rear, but that’s the only downside. The thick seven-layer fabric lid doesn’t allow outside noises into the cabin.

The grandkids want to ride with the top down, naturally. It’s a new experience and for the most part they enjoyed it, although it was a cool evening and after awhile they decided they wanted to be under cover. (Either that or they just wanted to see the mechanism at work again.)

The cloth top has another benefit…it doesn’t take up all the trunk space. With the top up, there’s 396.4 litres of space while retracting the top uses up only 84.9L, so you can actually pack stuff back there.

See other available options for the  Mercedes Benz E-class.

Benz has added two features to make top-down driving a little more comfortable. Aircap is a retractable spoiler on top of the windshield which diverts airflow over the passenger area. It’s especially effective at highway speeds with the side windows up. Front seat riders also get Airscarf, a heating system that blows warm air around your head and neck through vents integrated into the headrests.

Under the hood is a 5.5-litre V8 that emits a satisfying growl as it puts its 382 horses to work. Don’t expect head-snapping response, although you will find acceleration is brisk enough to keep you smiling as the quick, quiet seven-speed automatic transmission works its magic.

Highway ruts and parking lot speed bumps don’t cause the cabrio any concern. The suspension handles it all in its stride and the body structure has been beefed up to compensate for the missing top. I never did feel any cowl shake when roads got rough.

Handling is a bit heavy and the steering is somewhat slow on-centre, but once you get used to that, you’ll find this one very capable cruiser.

Is this a safe car? Hey, it’s a Mercedes-Benz. There are seven standard airbags and rear side bags can be had as an option. Reinforcements are everywhere and there are two thick tubular roll bars under the rear headrests that pop up should the car roll over.

Take the grandkids for a ride. They will love it too.
