Jetta good on so many levels

Given my track record with the Jetta TDI, I was hoping for a little better experience.

My last Jetta tester I had the honour to drive unfortunately wasn’t much fun. During a stretch of -40 weather, the poor Jetta TDI had to sit on my front street and froze up into a solid block of ice.

***Note to any car manufacturer: Winnipeg gets cold in winter; please supply the tester with a block heater.

But its being summer this time around, a block heater wasn’t necessary; so that’s one good thing.

The other good thing, the Jetta TDI is a pretty damn good car.

Look no farther than the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. This little power plant boasts 140 hp, which doesn’t seem like much, but when you have 236 lb.-ft. of torque behind it, this Jetta can move with plenty of go from a stop and lots of highway passing power.

The optional six-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) automatic transmission keeps the power available from low gears on up to the top end.

Sure the power is great, but the best part of the TDI Jetta is the fuel economy.

Most of the time, the Energuide fuel economy ratings are pure fantasy - testing in ideal conditions, under strict parameters.

Thankfully, the Jetta TDI makes the posted numbers of 6.7 city and 4.6 highway a reality. Behind the wheel I managed to squeeze out a nice 6.5 L/100km in combined city/highway driving. All of it without babying the throttle.

Power and fuel economy in one package? Amazing!

The Jetta handles pretty well and can manoeuvre around potholes quickly and safely with the addition of anti-slip regulation traction control, engine braking assist, electronic differential lock, and electronic stabilization program with hydraulic brake assist.

This Jetta TDI came in the Highline trim level that adds a power sunroof, digital compass, multifunction trip computer, MP3 player connectivity, premium sound system with touch screen and satellite radio capability, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel. With all the capabilities and connectivities, you should have plenty of gadgets with which to play.

The cabin is pretty safe as well with driver and passenger front and side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, and rear passenger side thorax airbags.

Passenger room is good up front, but can be a little tight in back for larger occupants.

The 60/40 split rear seats open up an already decently sized cargo room. Of course you could also open the trunk like everyone else to see that too.

The Jetta TDI offers a nice package of performance, fuel economy and features which can make the $32,275 price tag much more tolerable; and seeing as though you might not have to stop at too many gas stations and may even be doing your part in helping the environment, it may just be worth the extra change.
