Cherokee a Grand winter wizard

Generally, laughing at Mother Nature will only backfire.

Just when you think you’ve handled everything she throws at you, she let’s you know who’s boss.

With the new Jeep Grand Cherokee in my possession, for one week I got a chance to laugh and not feel one bit bad about doing so.

The 2011 Grand Cherokee is re-designed from the ground up. It stands on 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels, with a great looking exterior that not only looks big and ready to tackle what ever gets thrown at it, but it also manages to be quite tailored at the same time.

Under the hood is a new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine that offers up 290 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. For a vehicle of this size you would maybe expect the V6 wouldn’t be able to move with much gusto, but that isn’t the case. Mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, power is transferred to the road with enough effort that will make you forget about a big V8.

Powering through mud and snow is a breeze with the Quadra-trac II four-wheel drive system, where the driver can select from multiple options including Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock.

Driving normal roads is pretty good as well. On choppier roads the ride can feel a bit bouncy, but it’s nothing that can’t be overlooked. And if the city roads were actually in good condition you wouldn’t have to worry at all.

Highway driving is equally as nice and passing power from the V6 is quite good.

Inside, the refinement of the Grand Cherokee is evident with an overhaul of the interior dash and surfaces that aren’t all hard plastics. Wood trim and chrome accents the leather trim and upholstery to provide a quality look Jeep passengers will thoroughly enjoy.

The Grand Cherokee is capable of carrying seven people and even the fold-down third row can actually carry adults back there. The driver and front passenger get the pleasure of heated and cooled front seats. Second-row passengers get heated seats. While third-row passengers don’t get that kind of treatment; everyone gets to enjoy the huge, panoramic glass sunroof.

The AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA/JPEG/SAT audio system comes with an iPod connection and a navigation system.

Rear cargo room is adequate with the third-row seats in use. With them folded flat you get a really large space for large items. The 60/40 split second-row seats can fold down for even more cargo room. The rear door can also be closed at the touch of a button.

All it takes is for some snow to fall to make you understand the difference an SUV can really make. And when the vehicle you’re driving has the Jeep name attached to it, you know there isn’t much that’s going to stop it.

Except for maybe my time expiring on the latest weekly test drive.
