Patriot soldiers on for 2012

Whereas its Compass fraternal twin got a new look for 2012, the Jeep Patriot continues basically unchanged, with the emphasis still on rugged styling, off-road prowess, fuel economy and interior versatility.

One of the big news for 2012 is the availability of three new pearl coat exterior colours – Rescue Green, True Blue and Copperhead.

Despite featuring more than 30 safety and security initiatives - including standard performance stalwarts such as anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation and hill-start assist – Patriot remains the best priced SUV in North America (claims Chrysler). Add in full-side curtain airbags and you see why it was named a 2011 top safety pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Other standards include illuminated cup holders, sunscreen glass, removable/rechargeable flash light (which doubles as the overhead cargo area light), rear wiper, tilt steering column and cruise control, among others.

And of course, there are Chrysler mainstays (either standard or optional) such as the Uconnect media center with iPod interface, satellite radio, navigation, power sunroof, fog lights, Boston Acoustic premium audio system, articulating liftgate speakers, illuminated cup holders and fold-flat rear seats (expanding the cargo area from 651 litres to 1,776).

Standard power to Patriot is provided by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing, making 172 hp and generating 165 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s linked to a standard five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission that has been recalibrated to provide drivers with better launch feel, improved pedal responsiveness, smoother deceleration and reduced engine noise. With the proper set-up, Patriot can deliver up to 2,000 lbs. of towing capacity.

Patriot comes standard in front-wheel drive, and is also available with Freedom Drive I and Freedom Drive II off-road packages. Freedom I gives all weather capability with the ability to lock up the centre coupling for deeper, low traction surfaces. Freedom II grants Jeep’s Trail Rated designation with rock-crawl ration available for the CVT, skid plates, tow hooks, and 17-inch all-terrain tires (including a full-sized spare).

An All-weather Capability Group includes 17-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, all-season floor mats, engine block heater and tow hooks.
