Mustang shows performance cars who’s the Boss

Growing up a child of the ’60s, I can still remember the sounds of pure horsepower resonating through a set of chrome-plated Thrush mufflers on a lazy Saturday evening.

Sitting in the A&W drive-in lot, a tray with large yellow hooks hanging over the partially rolled down driver’s side window from which dad passed around four jugs of ice cold root beer, was heaven on earth. So too was the chrome Mustang Boss Hoss Silver Special Hot Wheels collectable I carried with me wherever I went.

Cruising was something the cool guys did on a nightly basis. I would have to wait until the mid-’70s before getting my license and then another few years before I too would have a car tough enough to make the scene.

Seated in the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 on this day, I reminisce about fast times gone by as I take hold of the six-speed manual shifter and slide the lever into first gear. Nostalgia is a powerful aphrodisiac, especially when combined with modern day Alcantara trim and Recaro seats.

The 2012 Boss 302 is powered by a 5.0-litre 32-valve TI-VCT V8 High Output engine. Equipped with forged aluminum pistons, upgraded connecting rods and revised oil baffling, it produces 444 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm.

Back in the day, one of the more common complaints was the fact most cars were equipped with manual steering. Turning low speed corners or parallel parking was not for the weak (literally). Today, it is much easier to enjoy the drive with power rack-and-pinion speed sensing steering. Rear-wheel drive, as in the glory days, keeps the memories close. Meet the new Boss, somewhat the same as the old Boss.

Exterior highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with front 245/35 and rear 285/35 performance tires. A rear spoiler is standard on the Boss 302, as are body coloured mirrors, pinstriping and polished tailpipes.

Interior features include air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, tilt steering, numerous beverage holders and a front center armrest. Seating is designed to fit four, with the rear seats folding down in a split configuration. AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio is standard.

If this sounds a little Spartan in today’s market, it’s meant to be. The Boss 302 is not a luxury sports coupe, but a driver’s pony car destined to be ridden hard and put away wet. This is purebred Mustang through and through.

Fast cars and hot motorcycles have always shared the road with a peculiar sense of kinship and antagonism. Bikers appreciate the heritage of a classic all-American car, however, and so it is we drive towards the Mecca for two and three-wheelers in southern Ontario.

Port Dover is located on the banks of Lake Erie. On most days, there isn’t a whole lot going on as this sleepy little town takes advantage of its prime lakeside location and soaks up the sun. Thirty years ago, Chris Simons and approximately 25 of his friends got together at the Commercial Hotel (now Angelos of Dover) and decided to change all of that at least twice a year.

The date was November 13, 1981. Loud and proud, they revelled in a day set aside for living the motorcycle dream. Everyone agreed it should happen again on the next Friday the 13th and so a new tradition was born.

Additional riders have swelled the ranks over the years. Nowadays 1,000s from all points in North America make their way to Port Dover like so many Lake Ontario salmon sensing the time has come to migrate to nearby Ball’s Falls. Hard core bikers to preachers, business men to crotch-rocket riders gather to enjoy the day and speak the language of horsepower and leather.

Our drive in takes just over two hours, but it is time well spent enjoying the unique traits of the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302.

With so much power on tap, you might be tempted to think this Boss is hard to control. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It hugs the road with tenacity, pushing resistance out of the way with the speed and skill of a professional boxer.

A quick stop for refreshments, sans the window tray, of course, and we are back on the road in search of Lake Erie coastline. On this day, Port Dover won’t be filled with motorcycles, but it doesn’t matter. We are content to cruise the roads in the dark blue Boss 302 and revel in the knowledge these are the good old days.
