Surprise performance from Cadillac wagon

Wherever we went, people would stop and stare at the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V SportWagon with strange looks on their faces, ask questions while scratching their heads. If ever there was a reason to spread the word wagons are so much more than just haulers, this car is it!

Performance comes in the form of a 6.2-litre V8 VVT SFI supercharged engine. Power numbers indicate 556 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 551 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,800 rpm. All this and the CTS-V SportWagon is rear-wheel drive, making it one of the most fun-to-drive vehicles I have experienced in a very long time. And yes, it’s a wagon.

Matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, 0-100 km/h takes 4.4 seconds. By comparison, this is .01 seconds faster than the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S. The quarter mile passes by in a mere 12.5 seconds, making it one of the fastest 4/5 door vehicles on the planet.

A stiff, four-wheel independent sport tuned suspension features rack and pinion speed-sensitive steering with properly tuned power assist. Brakes offer four-wheel disc, four-channel ABS with panic brake assist, dynamic rear brake proportioning and Brembo stopping power.

Rounding out the handling package, super low profile Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires display ratings for summer driving only, making our dash in the fall that much more exciting. Rims are 19-inch polished aluminum.

Inside, the CTS-V SportWagon stays true to its sports car attitude with heated/ventilated Recaro sport seats. Passenger space is for five, with plenty of room in the back for luggage or a quick run to the home building centre. Quick being the operative word here.

Standard equipment includes a navigation system with rear view camera and rear-parking assist. Options on our test vehicle include a full length sunroof and suede steering wheel. It feels good in my hands as I pull the ebony shift knob into first gear and push the accelerator.

Our destination of choice is The Sagamore Resort in upstate New York. Situated on Lake George, this luxurious country resort was first constructed in 1883 on Green Island - the dream of Myron O. Brown, who convinced four Philadelphia based millionaires to invest in the idea.

Over the years, fire ravaged the structure and it was reconstructed in its current shape as far back as 1930. In time, it fell into disrepair and eventually closed its doors in 1981. Restored to its former glory by real estate developer Norman Wolgin, once again of Philadelphia, it remains today as one of the finest northern U.S. resorts and family favourite of vacationers across North America.

A total of 375 rooms include 130 guestrooms in the historic hotel plus 112 Lodge rooms and 133 Lodge suites. All feature casual design elements and updated furnishings. Marble baths and high-speed Internet merge old and new with a choice of either garden or lake views available.

Dining is not the issue at The Sagamore, but rather where you would prefer to eat. Six options are available including La Bella Vita, Caldwell’s, Pavilion, Veranda Terraces, Mr. Brown’s, Club Grill and The Lakehouse. Available activities include The Spa at the Sagamore and a 1928 Donald Ross 18-hole golf course completely restored at a cost of 75 million in 1985.

The 2011 Cadillac CTS-V SportWagon is in many ways the quintessential escape vehicle for those looking to get out of town and relax in a dock-side Adirondack chair as fast as possible. Point and shoot isn’t just a term used for small cameras. In this case, aim the CTS-V SportWagon in the desired direction, think happy thoughts, push the pedal and you’re there.

Presto! It’s magic on four wheels.
