Nissan chooses new course for Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder concept introduced at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit is reportedly a good representation of the 2013 Pathfinder that makes its production debut in April 2012 at the New York International Auto Show, and hit showrooms in fall 2012.

The fourth generation Pathfinder will reportedly use a 3.5-litre V6 engine (according to Motor Trend magazine), which in the upcoming Infiniti JX35 makes 265 hp and 248 lb.-ft. of torque. The new JX35 and Pathfinder share development, and look relatively similar in their profiles.

Power delivery is entrusted to a continuously variable transmission for improved fuel efficiency (Nissan claims a 25% improvement over the previous V6-equipped Pathfinder). A four-wheel drive system will help with duties during off-roading, and Nissan says Pathfinder will have towing capacity competitive to that of other SUVs in the segment.

Part of the fuel economy solution is a switch to unibody architecture, foregoing the current generation’s body on frame (Titan pickup) platform, for a savings of about 227 kg (roughly 500 lbs.).

The new sport utility (which will likely change its designation to a “crossover”) will have three rows of seating capable of transporting up to seven passengers, though Nissan is keeping mum on interior details (the vehicle on the Detroit show floor had deeply tinted windows, effectively keeping prying eyes out). Nissan says it will deliver “innovation and class-above craftsmanship” along with “excellent legroom ... and ample cargo room behind the 3rd row.”

An image of the interior shows the interior arrayed in a 2-3-2 configuration in leather, with the middle row split 60/40 and the rear split 50/50. The evolutionary design features wood trim in the centre console and on a centre stack similar to that of the Quest minivan introduced last year. An entertainment system (presumably optional) features display screens in the front row head-restraints.

The concept’s exterior shows a fixed glass panel over the middle and third rows of seats, with a sunroof over the front row. Roof rails are a likely option, as are fog-lights and bright trim work on a line-topping Platinum package (the display trim of the show concept).

“This new Pathfinder Concept is just the beginning of a far-reaching wave of new products on the horizon for Nissan. By the end of 2012, more than 70% of our sales volume will be all-new or redesigned,” Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, adding the Pathfinder concept’s design hints at the styling direction of future Nissan products.
