With doors that slide length-ways and upwards to allow entry into the car, the new Saleen S7 is reminiscent of exotic racing-inspired ultra-performance cars from Lamborghini and Vector, and many are branding the new vehicle as America's supercar.

Saleen, a speciality vehicle manufacturer based in Irvine, CA., designed and engineered the high performance machine, and boasts that the top speed is a smidgen over 320 km/h. With 550 horses made by the engine, Saleen states the vehicle can go from 0 - 100 km/h in four seconds.

The left coast company has incorporated some racing technology into its vehicle, which has an engine based on a Ford-cast all aluminium block, with a displacement of 7.0 litres that rev up to 6400 rpm. With what seems like a heavy metal construction, Saleen has incorporated a magnesium throttle body and intake manifolds, stainless steel valves, titanium retainers, beryllium exhaust valve seats, and all aluminium designed heads.

"The car, when seen in person, has an amazing presence," said Steve Saleen, president of Saleen, Inc, at the unveiling of the muscle-bound beast in Monterrey California. "It's quite long and wide, yet only 41 inches high, adding to its exotic appearance. We wanted a 'form-follows-function' look, but one that was beautiful as well."

As much as the S7 is made for performance, the amenities are those of a luxury vehicle, with upholstery covered in Connolly leather and suede. Air conditioning, power windows, adjustable pedals, and a 6-disc CD player are all standard. The S7 also has some unique interior features, with a live video rear view "mirror," which uses a small video camera mounted in the rear of the car, and a steering wheel that can be removed if desired to ease ingress and egress.

Certified for sale in both the US and UK, the S7 will be sold through select Saleen Certified Ford dealers and other newly added Saleen Certified dealers specialising in exotic automobiles.

Production volume is expected to be 400 cars annually, with a planned run of four years. The price tag reflects the look and technology the car's image portrays, going for over CDN$550,000.
