The MINI's back, as in the MINI COOPER, the smallest car that can still accommodate four adults, plus luggage.

Similar to the original, it measures just ten feet long, four feet high, and four feet wide.

Besides its size and easily recognisable shape, BMW is also hoping to make a visual impression with options such as ornamental stripes, a panorama sunroof, and xenon headlights.

Bringing the COOPER into the present are ergonomically designed controls and instruments, and rotary knobs and toggle switches.

Safety features are also up-to-date, with driver and passenger front airbags, and side-impact airbags integrated in the seats. If you're worried about sliding around, the MINI COOPER can be optioned with Dynamic Stability Control.

And yes, some good things come in small packages, as the vehicle has a four-cylinder, 16-valve, 1.6-litre engine.

"The COOPER is not a retro-design car - rather, the COOPER stands for evolution. It has the genes and characteristics of its predecessor, but at the same time is larger, more powerful, more muscular, and more exciting than its predecessor ever was," explains Frank Stephenson, Chief Designer.

BMW Canada says the MINI COOPER will hit dealer showrooms in the year 2002, and will be marketed through new sales channels. However, the company has not yet decided which avenues to take, whether it be Internet marketing, or public events. If you really want to see a COOPER before then, the vehicle will make its debut in Europe next year.

The MINI was originally conceived by Alec Issigonis, and was launched in 1959 by the British Motor Corp., as a response to fuel rationing instituted because of the Suez crisis. The car achieved large scales of popularity, with 5.3 million produced to date. The rights to the vehicle were purchased by BMW in 1994.
