Isuzu continues its pace in the SUV market with the debut of its Axiom model at the 2001 North American International Auto Show.

Isuzu estimates it will sell 32,000 units annually of the upscale SUV.

The 2001 model vehicle has a decent 3.5-litre, dual-overhead cam 24-valve V6 engine, which produces 230 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 230 lb.- ft. at 3000 rpm. The engine features an aluminum alloy cylinder block and heads, with electronic sequential multi-point fuel injection, a direct ignition system, variable intake, and a drive-by-wire electronic throttle.

Isuzu is also using the Torque-On-Demand (TOD) system, which was co-patented by auto supplier Borg Warner, which is designed to provide better traction by selecting the most suitable torque distribution between the wheels automatically.

The suspension is of the independent front double-wishbone variety, with torsion bar, rear 5-link live axle that comes with coil springs suspension Intelligent Suspension Control (ISC) with mode switch (comfort/sport). According to Isuzu, the ISC uses a dedicated computer processing unit that monitors inputs for terrain and adjusts shock valving to provide better ride handling.
