Over 1000 horsepower? Well, that may be a stretch, but Bugatti's new EB 16-4 Veyron looks like it will be ranked amongst the most powerful cars in the entire automotive sector.

The 16-4 Veyron hasn't exactly been kept well under wraps, but parent company Volkswagen hasn't been keen on revealing all of the vehicles capabilities either. The car made a splash at the 2000 Paris motor show, but VW kept the car's statistics tightly guarded.

Recently, at the Geneva motor show all that changed, as numerous reports stated that VW leaked out that the Bugatti EB 16-4 Veyron was a monster of a sports car, with a possible output of 1001-horsepower. While 1000 plus horsepower would make the EB 16-4 Veyron more powerful than even Formula One cars, Bugatti's official site (bugatti-auto.at) lists the vehicle as only producing 630-horsepower.

Whether Volkswagen has upped the ante or not on its new monster remains to be seen. There's a good two years before the model goes into production, perhaps allowing for a boost of nearly 375-horsepower by the time the EB 16-4 Veyron takes a bow in 2003.

As of now, the vehicle's engine is made up of a light alloy and employs 16 cylinders in a "W" configuration. The four-wheel drive missile comes complete with four turbochargers, which helps the engine produce 921 lb.-ft of torque from between the 2200 to 5500 rpm range.

Bugatti said it will end all speculation as to the car's full capabilities at an unnamed later date, after complete testing of a full prototype production model.
