Debuting its new vehicular emissary, GMC has dropped the heavy mid-sized Envoy SUV on the Canadian masses, which offers up hefty levels of interior roominess and space.

General Motors states that its fresh offering is new "from the ground up," and said it created the Envoy with lots of interior space in mind, including plenty of first row, second row, head, leg, shoulder and hip room.

Its interior dimensions are similar to its sibling in the Oldsmobile Bravada, and that's not all it shares with the Olds SUV.

The Envoy is equipped with a similar engine to its brethren, with a 4.2-litre, inline six-cylinder Vortec 4200 engine. The output is great for a city vehicle, rated at a better-than-average 270-horsepower, with the Envoy's torque rated at an equally impressive 275 lb.-ft. at 3600-rpm.

The 2002 model appears to have been totally geared toward the consumer who likes amenities and space in his/her vehicle. GM said the SUV will include an industry-first factory-installed DVD rear entertainment system, which includes a 7-inch wide, flip-down, colour liquid-crystal display, and is capable of playing audio CDs along with DVD format - however, the DVD system is an option.

There's two trim levels for the latest GMC offering, the Envoy SLE and the SLT, with both coming in either two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive models. Standard equipment for both will include the HVAC heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, with separate airflow controls for the rear passengers, and memory/personalization features which can allow passengers to tailor mirror positions, radio station and HVAC settings, and allows the driver to tailor seat position.

The 2WD Envoy gets standard traction control for its drivetrain, while the 4WD model gets AutoTrac.

Vented four-wheel disc brakes, along with ABS, are some of the safety features included on the Envoy, which also has room to incorporate dual-stage front airbags, side impact thorax bags and a new hydroformed frame, which adds rigidity and strength to the body.

And if the TravelNote recorder, hidden storage compartments and RDS radio aren't enough equipment for you, you can always get some of the nifty options GMC is offering with the 2002 Envoy, which include: Sunroof, 6-CD stacker audio system, electronically assisted load levelling suspension, or polished wheels.

Pricing for the 2002 GMC Envoy starts at $37, 955 for the 2WD SLE, and jumps to $41,275 for the 4WD SLE. Envoy SLTs start a little higher, with the 2WD model starting at $42,345, and the 4WD going for $45,670.
