Saturn is trying to give Canadian consumers a VUE to a thrill by finally bringing to bear its first SUV, and pricing it at an economical manufacturers suggested retail price of $22, 495.

The 2002 VUE is a compact sport utility, and is Saturn's first foray into an already overcrowded, but highly lucrative market.

Visually different from other SUV's, Saturn has made the vehicle with its dependable dent-resisted panels, and gave it a look that makes it more unique. To top it off, the price is lower than many of its competitors in the compact utility segment, beating out the popular Toyota RAV-4.

"We set a very competitive price for the Saturn VUE right from the start to generate strong customer excitement," said Blair Upton, Director of Saturn Canada. "The Canadian compact SUV market is expected to grow by 45 per cent, exceeding 90,000 annual sales by 2005… We expect to earn a significant piece of that market with the Saturn VUE."

Automaker General Motors said it designed the Saturn VUE from the inside out, using themes it incorporated into the CV-1 concept vehicle.

The VUE has a horizontal bar between large headlamps, with bold flares over the wheels, and Saturn's trademark polymer bodyside panels, along with 16-inch wheels and tires.

Other exterior focal points include the car-height bumpers, and along with all the other elements added together, the VUE gives off a unique, yet somewhat passive, all-business look.

Access to the interior is gained a little more easily than most SUVs, done through a low step-in height for easy entry and exit.

As for utility, the rear cargo compartment appears larger than most, and the spare tire is stowed beneath the load floor, like on a passenger car. The rear space also has a pair of storage pockets to keep small items from rolling around, as well as hooks for plastic grocery bags and tie-down loops for securing larger items.

The rear seats are of a 70/30 fold-down configuration, and the front passenger seat backrest folds flat, so lengthy objects like an eight-foot ladder or surfboard can be carried inside the vehicle.

Made more for urban use, the VUE offers two engine choices - a four-cylinder and V6. Both are of the dual-overhead camshaft design, with the four-cylinder 2.2-litre pumping out 138-horsepower, and the V6 3.0-litre flexing a little more and producing 181-hp.

Apart from the difference in output, both models also incorporate different transmissions. The V6 comes in only an automatic configuration, 5-speed to be exact, but the four-cylinder engine could be accused of polygamy, married to your choice of either 5-speed manual transmission, or with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which uses a pair of variable-diameter pulleys and a steel belt to match engine output to vehicle speed.

Drivetrain differs slightly as well, with the four-cylinder engine offering both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive, while the more powerful V6 model is only available in the AWD format.

Options and other goodies for the 2002 Saturn VUE weren't disclosed at press time, but Saturn did reveal that pricing for the SUV will range from $22,495 for manual, FWD version, $23, 715 for the FWD variable transmission model, $26,055 for the AWD model, and $30, 155 for the V6, AWD level.
