An old name, with a fresh take, after a long lay-off BMW updated the MINI for release to the masses this year, and for Spring 2002, the German automaker is freshening things up once more, as the top of the line MINI Cooper S will make its way to these shores.

The general public will be able to first see the car at the Tokyo Motor Show on Oct. 26, but BMW has supplied most of the details on the MINI Cooper S, to get auto enthusiasts champing on the bit, anticipating the new offering.

The MINI Cooper S has all the things you've read about in the MINI over the last two-years, and more. It's 4-cylinder engine has been enhanced, with 16-valves, a mechanically driven supercharger and an intercooler, which helps to increase the output and performance.

The 1.6-litre engine now gives a 163-horsepower kick, at 6,000 rpm, and the turbocharger aids in getting a nice 155 lb.-ft of torque, as low as 4,000 rpm. The engine is hooked-up to a 6-speed manual transmission, which BMW says it made specifically for the MINI Cooper S, giving it that performance car feel.

The results: The MINI Cooper S can go from 0 - 100-km an hour in 7.4 seconds, with a top speed of 218-km/h.

The MINI Cooper S not only packs a nice jolt out of the starting gate, but according to BMW, it will be easy on your wallet as well. Firstly, the German automaker reports that the Cooper S will average 8.4-litres of fuel per 100-km (in EU figures), and second, BMW Canada said it expects to make the vehicle available to consumers for less than $30,000.

It looks like you'll get more than a little muscle for that price tag. The Cooper S will be loaded with safety features, including ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC).

BMW added that it was fitting, as standard, runflat tires, allowing the vehicle to travel as fast as 80-km/h for up to 150-km in the event of a puncture.

Standard safety features are rounded out by a tire defect indicator, where loss of pressure activates a warning light, front driver and passenger airbags, and belt tensioners and belt force limiters.

Other differences in the MINI from the MINI Cooper S are underlined by the exterior style. A letter "S" is placed on the side grille, and as a part of the rear MINI logo, and the two tailpipes are chrome-plated, giving off a sportier look.

BMW said it will also offer a wide choice of options when the MINI Cooper S becomes available in April of 2002, including a Harman/Kardon HiFi audio system and a TV navigation unit, extra-large electrical panorama sunroof, Park Distance Control (PDC) and xenon headlights.
