The MINI is back! The MINI is back!

After more than 20 years, the little car that could is available once again in Canada, resurrected by BMW under the name MINI Cooper. Fourteen MINI dealerships opened their doors across the country on March 22, signalling the end of MINI's hiatus.

The original MINI premiered in 1959, and was designed by Alec Issigonis. The new versions, the MINI Cooper and Cooper S, borrow several design cues from the original.

The shape of the all-in-one bonnet, with its large round headlamps, gives the MINI its "face." An extremely short tail, a steeply rising side section and the dominant rear lamps give it a squat, compact look. The flared wheel arches and the horizontal lines of the tail section add to the appearance of width from behind. The wheel-at-each-corner design gives the car real dynamic advantages on the road in terms of stability and agility, according to BMW.

The interior design has brought the simple and straightforward look of the original into the 21st century with its characteristic centre speedometer.

MINI Cooper is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.6 litre, 16-valve engine producing 115 hp, which can reach 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour) in 9.2 seconds and has a top speed of 200 km/h (125 mph). Combined fuel consumption rates at 6.7 litres per 100 km.

The MINI Cooper S is powered by a four-cylinder 1.6 litre 16 valve engine that produces 163 hp. Acceleration from 0 100 km/h comes in a 7.4 seconds, and the top speed is 218 km/h (135 mph). Fuel-wise, the Cooper S averages 8.4 litres per 100 km.

Large disc brakes (front ventilated) on all four wheels, supplemented by four-sensor ABS with CBC (cornering brake control) and electronic braking distribution (EBD), fitted as standard, provide the MINI with excellent braking performance. ASC + T traction control or DSC dynamic stability control are also available.

Safety-wise, the MINI offers a rigid passenger cell, advanced crumple zones and an airbag system unique in its vehicle category. The driver and passenger are protected by front and side airbags. The MINI is the only vehicle in its class to offer a head airbag system as an option (AHPS 2 = Advanced Head Protection System), providing the front and rear seat passengers with maximum protection against head injuries in the event of side impacts. A tire pressure warning indicator and a "get-you-home" puncture repair system are provided as standard. Optional 16 inch and 17 inch wheels are fitted with run-flat tires on the Cooper, with the 16 inch tires fitted as standard on the Cooper S.

The MINI Cooper retails in Canada for $24,950, and the Cooper S is available for $29,600.
