The next-generation Mercedes CLK coupe will feature an all-new "pillarless" body design with an uninterrupted line of frameless side windows. The distinctive overlapping oval headlights and louvered grille with the Mercedes star have also been refreshed. The CLK body is about 71 milimetres (three inches) longer, 18 mm (3/4 in.) wider and more than 42 mm (1 1/2 in.) higher than its predecessor. Mercedes says these larger dimensions add to interior space.

Inside, the dash, centre console, door panels and seats have been newly designed, and classic analog dials are accented in chrome. The rear seats and backrests have been asymmetrically divided to provide different cargo-storing options, and both rear seats can fold forward to create an almost level cargo-loading surface.

Other features include Keyless Go (ignition), adaptive cruise control, and bi-xenon headlights.

Safety-wise, the CLK coupe has been enhanced by doubling the amount of high-strength steel allow used in the body structure, thereby improving the torsional rigidity by 40 per cent.

The CLK also houses adaptive front air bags, front/rear side air bags, and curtain side air bags, as well as seat-belt tensioners and belt-force limiters on all the seats.

The vehicle will be offered in V6 and V8-powered coupes, with a Cabriolet likely to follow in 2003.
