The HUMMER family is celebrating a new arrival, and proud papa GM Canada is displaying it not as an infant or toddler, but a grown-up ready to meet all the expectations of its military predecessor.

Affectionately called the "baby HUMMER", the all-new 2003 HUMMER H2 made its debut at the Canadian International Auto Show in mid-February 2002.

The production version of the H2 was inspired by the HUMMER H2 concept that appeared at the 2000 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

H2 takes the "rugged" characteristics of the original and refines them for the street, adding more creature comforts yet maintaining the original's awesome off-road prowess.

It makes its debut in the truck world as the more "civilized" family member, providing all the features and amenities that a premium SUV customer requires.

Yet it's capable of travelling through streams 20 inches deep, climbing 16-inch steps and rocks, paddling through deep sand and outdistancing competitors in high-speed desert runs ... if that's what you're into.

A long wheelbase, wide tread and short overhangs provide superior control in various road or terrain conditions.

For $70,745, H2 features a standard Vortec 6000 V8 engine that generates 316 hp and 360 lbs.ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a heavy-duty 4L65-E four-speed automatic transmission, as well as a Borg-Warner two-speed electrically controlled full-time 4WD system. A Bosch four-channel antilock braking/traction control system provides optimum control on slippery surfaces.

Inside, eight-way power-adjustable front seats provide comfort while an AM/FM/cassette/CD system provides the ambient music. Other standard features include heavy-duty trailering equipment, front winch receiver, remote keyless entry, cruise control, OnStar, and dual zone climate-control.

Customized accessories will satisfy HUMMER owners' desire to personalize their vehicles. These include wrap-around brush guards, roof-mounted luggage basket with or without a hard cargo cover, sunroof, and roof-mounted and/or grill-mounted off-road lights.

General Motors Service Parts Operations will supply these and many other accessories, with dealers installing them in the seamless fashion of regular factory options, prior to customer delivery.

The optional Adventure Package ($5,565) includes a 6-disc CD changer, heated leather front seats, chrome appearance package, tubular assist steps and upgraded double crossbar rack. An Outdoor Package ($7,565) includes the Adventure Package plus air suspension, brush guards, first aid kit, tool kit and tubular tail lamp covers.

H2 will be sold exclusively at the following dealerships in Canada:

Plaza Chevrolet Oldsmobile Cadillac Inc., St-Laurent, Que.
Surgenor GMC Truck Centre, Ottawa, Ont.
Surgenor Pontiac Buick Ltd., Ottawa, Ont.
Roy Foss Motors, Thornhill, Ont.
