September may mean the end of summer, but it means the beginning of Mitsubishi Motors in Canada. Which means the arrival of the Eclipse Spyder.

Although new to Canada, the convertible Spyder has been available in the United States since the 2001 model year. For 2003, the model's exterior has been refreshed, with a restyled urethane front facscia that features a new grille opening and provisions for a pair of fog lights. A new halogen headlight arrangement sits on top of the new nosepiece.

In the back, a set of "Euro-flavoured" composite taillights features clear lenses that cover trios of lamps. All three trim levels of the Spyder (GS, GT and GTS) will ride on new aluminum wheels, with "super-sized" 17-inch aluminum wheels with a finned spoke design. Drivers can also have a new colour to choose from in the 2003 model: Alloy Green.

Under the hood, the GS model has a 2.5 litre SOHC 16 valve, four-cylinder engine that generates 147 horsepower at 5,500 rpm.

The GT and new GTS models house a 3.0 litre V6 engine that is fitted with Manifold Variable Induction Control (MVIC), a variable intake system that alternates intake flow paths between the manifold's short and long runners, according to a statement released by Mitsubishi. This flexibility and an increased compression ratio raises engine output to 210 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 205 lbs.-ft of torque at 3750 rpm.

The Spyder's interior also comes with two new colour choices this year, Midnight and Sand, both of which are available in cloth or leather. The GTS level features a 210 Mitsubishi/Infinity 6-CD changer system with steering wheel audio controls, a fog light package, side impact airbags, and a newly redesigned leather interior.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder will go on sale starting in September at 31 new dealerships in Canada, and will retail between $35,000 and $43,000.
