General Motors Corp. announced it will build a new mid-size pickup truck for the 2004 model year. The truck's name? GMC Canyon.

"The mid-size truck segment is extremely important and highly competitive, " Craig Bierley, marketing director for mid-size trucks at GMC, said in a statement. "Canyon will dramatically enhance our competitiveness in this important segment."

Production on the Canyon will begin in the fourth quarter of 2003 at GM's Shreveport, Louisiana truck plant, the automaker said. The Canyon will be the sixteenth truck introduced by GMC's Professional Grade division.
