The Montero is a sport utility vehicle with a history of off-road racing -- it has won 17 years worth of Paris-to-Dakar rally trophies so far. While this is the first year that it is being offered in Canada, the Montero is currently sold in 170 countries. Mitsubishi claims this SUV is a "rugged, adaptable vehicle, ideally suited for those who indulge in family trips, treks across untamed desert, or the valet line at the nightclub."

Power for the Montero comes from a 3.8 litre SOHC 24-valveV6 engine that provides 215 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, and 248 lbs.ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm. The engine is paired with a standard five-speed Sportronic Sequential Shift five-speed automatic transmission, which allows drivers to manually shift gears if they prefer.

The ActiveTrac four-wheel drive (4WD) system also comes as a standard feature in both the XLS and Lmited trim levels, as do rear-wheel drive, full-time all-wheel drive (AWD), and 4WD high-range and low range, both with locked-centre differential.

Other standard mechanical features include power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and Multi-mode four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS).

On the outside, Montero sports a chrome-accented grille with the Mitsubishi emblem, side cladding meant to provide a "smooth sleek appearance," integrated side steps as well as running boards to facilitate entry into the vehicle.

Inside, the seven-passenger Montero features standard equipment such as a 140-watt Mitsubishi/Infinity AM/FM/CD audio system, air conditioning, premium fabric seat covering, power windows and door locks heated outside mirrors, security system with remote keyless entry, electronic engine mobilizer, three 12-volt power outlets, front and rear reading lights, and six cup holders placed throughout the cabin.

The Montero offers versatile cargo-carrying options, courtesy of roof rails that facilitate roof-top cargo hauling, and a third-row seat seat that completely disappears into a well in the cargo-area floor. Alternately, the third row seat can also be removed completely, to provide a deep, covered storage well in addition to the rear cargo area.

The Limited trim level offers leather seating surfaces, woodgrain interior accents, a 315-watt Mitusishi/Infinity premium audio system with seven speakers, heated front seats, illuminated running boards, an oversized power glass sunroof, and an LCD information centre with compass, outside temperature, miles-to-empty, date and time.

The 2003 Montero Sport is priced in Canada starting at $41,987 for the XLS base model, to $48,507 for the Limited, and is available at Mitsubishi dealerships across Canada.
