Luxury in the mid-sized SUV market just got a boost: In October 2002, Lincoln launched the all-new 2003 Lincoln Aviator, its first mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle. But don't be fooled by the Aviator's smaller size, says Lincoln, because the vehicle was designed to offer "the most flexible seating, roomiest cabin and best towing capability in its class."

"The mid-size luxury SUV segment is red hot. Aviator defines a new niche between car-based and full-size luxury SUVs," Lincoln Mercury pre sident Darryl Hazel said in a statement.

The Aviator was designed from the onset to complement the larger Lincoln Navigator, according to the automaker. The Aviator’s interior takes its design direction from Navigator by also using satin nickel, American walnut burl wood, premium leather and white light-emitting diode (LED) instrument lighting as interior accents. The smaller SUV in available in both two- and all-wheel drive configurations and two series: Luxury and Premium.

Key features in the 2003 Aviator, according to Lincoln, are best-in-class front-seat headroom and legroom, optional second-row bench seat, fold-flat third row seat, and cargo-carrying capacity of 77 cubic feet.

On the outside, the Aviator is marked as a Lincoln by its signature grille with large, clear-lens, quad-beam halogen headlamps. A high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlamp system is optional. Other standard exterior features include the large, heated, power-adjustable side mirrors that also feature a memory system, integrated turn signal repeaters and approach lamps. A two-piece liftgate with flip-up rear glass provides a shopping-cart-height liftover for small items such as grocery bags.

Inside, the Aviator comes equipped with several standard "comf ort and luxury" features, such as dual-zone electronic climate control, power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals, Rear Park Assist system (triggers a warning if an obstacle is detected when reversing), and six-way power-adjustable driver and front-pa ssenger seats with power lumbar support and two memory settings for the driver’s seat, side mirrors, brake and accelerator pedals.

Entertainment in the Aviator comes from an AM/FM premium sound system with in-dash compact disc player, cassette play er and secondary controls mounted on the steering wheel. Sound-blocking laminated front door glass and privacy glass for the rear doors, quarter windows and liftgate create an insulated environment for driver and passengers.

Additional equipment on Premium models includes HID headlamps, heated and cooled seats, an in-dash six-disc compact disc changer and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels. Options include a power moonroof, a DVD rear-seat entertainment system and a Class III towing package.

The Aviator is propelled by an all-aluminum, 4.6-litre V-8 DOHC engine with four valves per cylinder and variable-length intake runners to produce 302 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, and the SUV boasts a maximum towing capacity of 7,300 pounds (

Other features include four-wheel independent suspension with coil springs and monotube dampers, 17-inch wheels and tires and speed-sensitive, variable assist ZF Servotronic II rack-and-pi nion steering. Braking is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock control and electronic brakeforce distribution.

Aviators with all-wheel drive that are paired with the optional AdvanceTrac™ traction and stability enhancement system need only one wheel with traction to get under way because the two systems combined allow torque to be shifted side-to-side and front-to-rear, according to Lincoln.

Safety features in the Lincoln include a Personal Safety System™, which includes dual-stage front air bags, safety belt pretensioners and load-limiting retractors, side curtain air-bag system, a SecuriLock anti-theft system and optional AdvanceTrac system that helps correct oversteer and understeer skids (available later in the model year). A tire-pressure monitoring system will also be available later on.

The 2003 Lincoln Aviator is available at Canadian dealerships starting at $58,950.
