Mitsubishi Motors unveiled the refreshed version of the economy car at the 2003 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. The company also announced the expansion of the Lancer family with the addition of an exciting front-wheel-drive performance variant, the Lancer Ralliart.

The 2004 Lancer’s new look provides the exterior with a "more expressive, exciting and youthful attitude," according to Mitsubishi. The chiseled, extended split-grille helps alter the proportion and silhouette of the 2004 Lancer, adding a greater sense of sportiness and elegance, and provides a clear view into Mitsubishi Motors’ global design direction. The split-grille prominently features Mitsubishi’s triple-diamond logo, with its pyramid shape providing stability and balance to the vehicle’s overall design. The split-grille theme is a design icon that will continue to evolve and will appear in all future Mitsubishi Motors products around the world, including the redesigned Diamante and the all-new Galant.

The new 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart delivers improved acceleration and sharper handling. This front-wheel-drive, four-door Lancer sedan has been treated to a host of drivetrain, suspension and styling modifications designed to appeal to enthusiast drivers. Equipped with a larger, more powerful, 2.4-litre motor and a stiffer set of coil springs and shocks, the Lancer Ralliart offers a swift, responsive package that is also a performance value.

As it appears on the Ralliart model, the new Lancer will wear an extended front fascia and revised decklid common to all 2004 Lancer models. This revised front end has been fitted with a sporty split-grille arrangement, as well as a new, sculpted halogen lamp arrangement. Attractive clear taillight lenses and a unique aerodynamic package, which includes a new rear wing, help complete the Lancer Ralliart’s impressive visual package.
