Matrix, Protegé5 and Focus ZX5, look out: there's a new five-door wagon on the horizon.

The 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback is based on the Lancer sedan, but boasts more cargo space thanks to its five-door hatchback design, and is "beefed up" with a new 2.4 litre MIVEC engine. The Sportback offers two trim lines and two levels of performance: the LS and the Ralliart, Mitsubishi’s international performance brand.

Mitsubishi calls the LS the "sleeper" of the Sportback models, because it hides a high-torque engine with a "civilized" body. The 2.4-litre MIVEC engine with variable valve timing system produces 160 lb. ft. of torque and 160 horsepower. Front strut and rear multi-link suspension is backed up with dual stabilizer bars and Lancer's rally-bred chassis. Four-wheel disc brakes, engine-speed sensitive rack-and-pinion steering and 195/60R15 tires round out the performance hardware.

Inside, the LS comes equipped with air conditioning, a 140-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers, white-faced gauges, a height-adjustable driver's seat, tilt steering wheel, power windows, door locks and side-view mirrors and remote keyless entry.

The rear seat folds 60/40, reclines for comfort and includes a centre armrest with fold out cup holders. In the cargo area, under-floor and side storage compartments, 12-volt power outlet and four cargo tie-down hooks are also standard.

The interior offers up to 95 cubic feet of passenger space, according to Mitsubishi, and 42.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded down.

For those who are looking to add a bit of a "tuner" edge, the Ralliart model comes equipped with a full sport suspension, front strut tower brace, 205/50R16 tires on euro-flange alloy wheels and anti-lock brakes. Its engine produces 162 horsepower and 162 lbs. ft. of torque, a slight increase from the LS. The Ralliart also looks the part with a lower body kit, unique grille, tinted headlamp lenses and projector-beam fog lights.

Inside, high-end Lancer Evolution sport seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shifter and parking brake lever and carbon-style accent panels hint at the Ralliart's racing heritage. A six-speaker audio system, standard cruise control and driver's and passengers front and side impact air bags are also included.

The 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback will hit Canadian dealerships in September 2003. Pricing will be announced closer to the launch date.
