Infiniti's G35 Sport Coupe joins the Infiniti lineup to do battle with the likes of the Acura 3.2CL, BMW 330Ci, Mercedes CLK320 and Volvo C70.

"This is the first time Infiniti has offered a coupe in Canada," said Richard Pendrill, director and general manager, Infiniti, in a statement. "The G35 Coupe is a car that takes Infiniti forward in a new direction, combining the high performance, rear-wheel drive and luxury amenities of our flagship Q45 and G35 sedans with the emotion and excitement that comes with sports car styling and packaging."

The G35 Sport Coupe shares the sedan's innovative front midship platform, where the engine is positioned behind the front axle for a better front-to-rear weight balance of 52:48. The balanced package aids performance with better balance during cornering, acceleration and braking. The platform also positions large diameter wheels and tires near the corners of the vehicle, providing an extra measure of handling stability. An optional Aero package adds a rear spoiler for high-speed stability, and side air diffusers.

The G35 Sport Coupe uses the sedan's standard 3.5-litre DOHC 24-valve V6, with aluminum-alloy block and heads and electronically controlled "drive-by-wire" throttle system. However, it receives a higher level of engine performance and exhaust tuning than the sedan, resulting in a horsepower rating of 280, versus the sedan's 260. The G35 Sport Coupe will be offered with a choice of 5-speed automatic transmission (with manual shift mode) or an all-new 6-speed manual transmission. Infiniti's Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is standard.

An advanced lightweight 4-wheel multi-link suspension features special "ripple control" shock absorber technology for responsive yet comfortable ride and handling. The G35 Sport Coupe is tuned more aggressively than the sedan. Standard 18-inch wheels are shod with wide 225/45R18 tires up front and 245/45s in the rear. Braking is entrusted to 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes, Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).

The G35 Sport Coupe shares the sedan's wheelbase but is slightly shorter overall, wider and doesn't stand as high, again contributing to a more stable handling package.

The interior combines a driver-oriented cockpit with Infiniti levels of luxury and detail. The sport-contoured seats are manufactured exclusively for the G35s, wrapped in ultra-soft leather. The front seats are power adjustable and heated. The sculpted fold-down rear seat offers 2+2 seating and a pass-through to the trunk.

Other interior amenities include the Infiniti signature analog clock, electro-fluorescent gauge illumination, power windows and locks, power glass sunroof, and a digital Bose premium audio system with 8 speakers and an in-dash 6-CD changer. The DVD-based Infiniti Navigation System with 6.5-inch wide retractable monitor is optional.

For occupant protection, every G35 comes with standard dual-stage front airbags, front side-impact airbags and side-impact air-curtains.

The Infiniti G35 coupe went on sale in Canada in November 2002. Pricing starts at $45,000.
