Maserati made somewhat of an impression at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show when it took the wraps off of its 2002 Spyder, which later marked the marque's return to North America after a near decade-long absence.

The sexy convertible is based on the Maserati 3200 GT, but is about 8-inches shorter in the body. However, the Spyder's engine is all its own, as Maserati gave it a 4.2-litre, 32 valve V8, which produces 390 horsepower and a maximum torque of 333 lb.-ft.

The production vehicle will have a top speed of 281-km/h, and its gearbox and differential are placed in the rear. The transmission is an electronically controlled 6-speed that has four separate modes (normal, sport, auto and low grip, that can be selected through the knobs on the centre console.

The Italian automaker said it expects to sell 1200 Spyders in the US market for 2002, with prices starting at about $98,000 US. No entry has been planned for the Canadian market, so Maserati enthusiasts will likely have to import a Spyder if they want one
