The all-new Lacetti is a five-door hatchback that was created by the ItalDesign studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its exterior features almond-shaped headlights, long wheelbase with short overhangs, prominent wheel arches, muscular shoulder line and wrap-around rear lights. A bold new grille design houses a chrome-accented logo.

Inside, "generous" amounts of interior space await passengers, according to a statement released by GM Daewoo. Rear legroom is class-leading, and the rear bench can be split and folded asymmetrically to increase the capacity of the loadspace.

The Lacetti offers a choice of three different powerplants: 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 litre engines range from 92 to 122 horsepower, with a torque of 127 to 135 Nm (about 93.6 to about 121.7 lb.-ft). All three powerplants feature four-valve technology with dual overhead camshafts driven by a toothed belt. A modern four-speed automatic transmission is available for the two larger engines as an alternative to the standard five-speed manual transmission.

The new Lacetti has a high torsional stiffness bodyshell which assures both a high level of active and passive safety and excellent handling, GM Daewoo says. Independent suspension uses MacPherson struts front and rear. Wheel control at the front is taken care of by an A-frame arm, while at the rear there are two additional wishbones and one trailing arm link.

Four disc brakes and standard four-channel ABS by Bosch ensure well-controlled deceleration, according to the automaker. Front and side airbags and five three-point safety belts — the front belts also have belt-force limiters — are fitted as standard for passenger protection.

The 2004 GM Daewoo Lacetti went on sale in Europe in February 2004, and later in Canada as the Optra5.
