A Lotus sports car for under $40,000 US? Better believe it.

Currently on sale in the U.K. and Europe, the Elise has been modified and features a powertrain specifically tuned for the U.S. market.

This "affordable," hand-built Lotus will be powered by a 2ZZ-GE 1.8 litre 4 cylinder 16-valve engine with Variable Valve Timing and Lift-Intelligent (VVTL-i) system. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox and mounted amid-ships, according to a statement released by the company. The VVTL-i system affords the car increased low-end torque for greater acceleration from low engine speeds, before unleashing the full 190hp at the higher end of the rev range.

Manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation, the VVTL-I engine and gearbox was selected for its light weight, high power output and suitability to the character of the Elise.

The 2005 Lotus Elise will go on sale in the U.S. in mid-2004, according to the automaker.
