MINI is not content to have one of the most widely-accepted models launched in recent years. The BMW-owned brand is following that up in the fall of 2004 with the introduction of a convertible model.

The new model will make its North American debut at Vancouver's Pacific International Auto Show, March 27 to April 4, 2004.

The new car is covered by a full length fabric roof, which slides back about a foot and half to create a sunroof-like opening, or opens completely and stacks itself behind the rear seats. Without requiring the driver to release any catches or clamps, the fully-automatic soft roof doubles back on itself smoothly at the touch of a button, converting to open-air motoring in just 15 seconds.

There are reportedly a choice of three colours for the soft top, and a couple of new exterior colours exclusive to the convertible model.

MINI Coopers are well known for their handling prowess, and the convertible didn't want to break that tradition. A long wheelbase, low centre of gravity, wide track, multi-arm rear axle and the direct, electrohydraulic power steering all go together to provide the foundation for the excellent driving behaviour and go-kart feel so typical of the MINI name. Structural reinforcements keep body shake to a minimum even when the top is down.

As with the coupe model, power will come from a 115-hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder or the supercharged 163-hp version in the Cooper S. It is assumed that the trim levels will keep the same designations.

On the safety front, the new convertibles will come with fixed aluminum tube roll-bars located behind the rear seats. Anti-lock brakes are standard, while traction and stability control systems are optional. Seat-integrated side-impact airbags are also standard.

The MINI Convertible on display at the PIAS will be in the guise of the 115 horsepower MINI Cooper. The drive concept with a long wheelbase, a low centre of gravity, wide track, multi-arm rear axle and the direct, electrohydraulic power steering all go together to provide the foundation for the excellent driving behaviour and go-kart feeling so typical of the MINI.

Models are expected in showrooms in September 2004, with prices yet to be set.
