Jaguar has announced a limited edition XKR named Silverstone, after the British Grand Prix Formula One racing course, where a Jaguar XK 120 drove to victory in 1949. The company stated it was a fitting harbinger, as Jaguar is preparing to enter Formula One once more, in 2001, with former CART champion Bobby Rahal at the helm.

"The XKR Silverstone celebrates Jaguar's much-anticipated entry into Formula One competition and, at the same time, commemorates the site of some of our proudest moments in motorsports from the past," said Mike O'Driscoll, president of Jaguar North America. "The performance credentials will position it among today's most sought-after sports cars, while offering a fitting tribute to the Jaguar heritage."

Jaguar has equipped the Silverstone with the most powerful production engine the automaker has produced - an AJ-V8 engine that delivers 370 horsepower and 387 ft-lb. of torque. The company boasts the XKR Silverstone coupe is capable of reaching 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, and 5.6 seconds for the convertible model. The top speed is electronically limited to 249 km/h.

Of course, with a name like Silverstone the vehicle has been given an exterior Platinum Silver paint finish, while the convertible is fitted with a black top. The interior has sport seats and a steering wheel trimmed in charcoal leather, with red stitching providing a highlight on the steering wheel, centre console, door armrests and floor mat edging. Both models are equipped with a 320-watt Alpine Audiophile Sound System, with multiple speakers and a six CD autochanger.
