The road leading north from the hills above Santa Barbara, Calif., is a twisty, two-lane affair perfect for putting a hot, new, two-seat sports car through its paces.

Or, as it turns out, a pickup truck that thinks it's a high-performance European touring car.

That would be the 2001 GMC Sierra C3 half-tonne pickup, the upscale brother of the standard Sierra that will soon be rolling off the assembly line in Oshawa.

After spending an evening with some of GMC's top engineers and project managers, it's time to put their glowing descriptions to a brief test.

Within a couple of kilometres, it becomes clear they weren't kidding when they said they had built "something more than just a truck."

The 6,800-lb GVWR truck (featuring full-time all-wheel drive that maintains a 38/62 front-to rear power under all conditions) handles the switchbacks, at speed, with real aplomb.

As Sierra brand manager Jim Kornas put it: "If BMW were to build a pickup, this would be it!"

No question, the C3 is like no pickup truck you've ever driven.

It is, as the engineers and marketing people have made clear, a truck for the very successful man in the 35-50 age group who probably already owns a couple of top-of-the-line cars but wants to add a pickup to his "fleet."

Not just any pickup, mind you, but one that meets his high standards for power, luxury, handling and high-tech convenience. Price, needless to say, is no object. (MSRP is $48,995.)

On the outside, the C3 features clean, understated lines that are easy on the eyes. Side mouldings and door handles are the same colour as the body. The running boards are chrome with mudflaps, but moulded, colour-keyed units are also available. The fitted tonneau over the cargo bed is, as is virtually everything on the C3, standard equipment.

Lighting includes fog lamps cut into the fascia and "puddle" lights mounted under the fender mirrors so you won't soil your Guccis.

The driver-side mirror is a heated, electrochromatic affair that changes subtly as day turns to night.

The body, built on a massive box frame, sits astride beautifully sculpted, 17-inch aluminum wheels and Michelin all-season radial tires.

Inside, it's hard to imagine a more luxurious truck cabin: Leather from the seats to the steering wheel; deep pile carpeting; power windows and doorlocks; remote keyless entry system; dual playback AM/FM/cassette stereo with a six-disc CD changer (redundant radio controls are built into the steering wheel); power outlets for cell phones and computers ... the list is endless. There's even a transmission temperature gauge to go with the rest of the analog gauges.

If you can think of it, the C3 has it.

The highly acclaimed Onstar information system provides everything from roadside assistance to customized news reports and hands-free cellular phone calls. Press one button, speak clearly at the tiny microphone in the headliner, and you're instantly connected with an operator.

A Homelink system provides remote control of the garage door ... or the gates at the estate.

A driver information centre located on the dash calculates fuel economy, average speed, remaining fuel, and trip mileage. It also allows customization of niceties such as headlamp delay and remote unlock.

In keeping with the off-scale appointments, GMC's engineers have built what they call a "performance-biased driveline."

Powered by a 325-hp version of the six-litre, Vortec 6000 V-8, which runs on standard gasoline, the C3 has enough torque (370 lb.ft. at 4,000 rpm, with 90% of peak torque continuously available between 1,600 and 5,200 rpm) to move anything up to a small home. The heavy-duty, Z28 towing package is rated at 8,700 lbs.

The heavy-duty, automatic transmission provides positive shifts, while the power-assist, four-wheel ABS disc brakes can stop the rig in its tracks with no sign of fade after hard usage.

All in, the C3 certainly lives up its billing as a pickup truck like no other.
