Calling it the beginning of a renaissance, Ford introduced the Lincoln Zephyr sedan to Canadian audiences at the 2005 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

The Zephyr features new, distinctive exterior styling and 'a driving experience that can be both luxurious and spirited,' according to Lincoln, in the hopes that it can appeal to new, younger drivers. The original Zephyr debuted in 1936 and sold for $1,400. Though it won't cost that much, the new Zephyr continues design cues and style from the vehicle that orginally came out 30 years ago.

The front of the Zephyr includes the trademark Lincoln waterfall grille. High-intensity discharge headlamps are optional and chrome touches are added to the beltline and mirror caps. Chrome-tipped dual exhausts are added to exude more sportiness.

Inside the Zephyr, real wood and leather is abundant. White electro-luminescent lighting can be found around the chrome-ringed gauges and is used to complement the interior's white lighting.

There is room inside for five adults. The Zephyr's base architecture was stretched, adding an extra 30 mm. of width and 55 mm. to the wheelbase. The trunk has 15.8-cubic feet of cargo space with a flat load floor and the 60/40 rear seats fold flat for even more cargo space. The decklid includes compact hinge mechanisms that won't impinge on cargo space or crush anything put in the trunk.

Giving even more reason to stay inside the Zephyr once seated, it includes an optional 10-speaker surround sound audio system and a DVD-based navigation system with a 6.5-inch-wide screen.

The Zephyr houses a standard Duratec 30 DOHC V-6 engine that produces 210-horsepower and 200 lbs-ft. of torque. It will be rated an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle for California. The engine will be mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The sedan's ride is meant to be quiet and nimble thanks to a fully independent suspension system with a focus on ride comfort. To further reduce cabin noise, the 17-inch tires were specifically chosen because they complemented the suspension.

The Zephyr includes standard driver and front passenger air bags and side air bags. It also includes a full-length safety curtain that runs from the A-pillar to the C-piller for head protection. An antilock braking system and electronic brake force distribution is featured, as is traction assist.

The 2006 Zephyr will be built at the Ford's Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico and will be available in North American in the fall of 2005.
