Much to the delight of high-performance car fans all over the world, the latest Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution debuted at the 2005 New York International Auto Show.

The 2006 Lancer Evolution IX is available in three trim levels - the stock 'IX', RS and MR. All three house the same 2.0-litre inline-4 cylinder turbocharged engine, are all-wheel drive and now have variable valve technology (VVT). VVT helps the Evolution produce higher torque across its entire rpm range. The vehicle itself weighs from 3,219 lbs. to 3,338 lbs., depending on the trim level.

The Evolution IX produces 286 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 289 foot-pounds of torque at a low 3,500 rpm and is mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission, while a close-ratio six-speed manual is available on the RS.

The newest Evolution is the 12th model in its line of cars. All three trim levels incorporate a rally-tuned fully independent suspension and the MR trim utilizes Bilstein monotube shock absorbers. All models come with three active centre differential (ACD) modes - one each for tarmac, gravel and snow - which enables the car quicker response to changing weather conditions. It comes with four-wheel ventilated Brembo disc brakes for plenty of stopping power.

The exterior has plenty of race-inspired features to keep fans happy. A new oversized mesh grille can be found on the front of the Evo as well as front centre bumper air inlets for more engine-cooling efficiency.

The rear has a hollow carbon fiber spoiler that lowers the car's centre of gravity according to Mitsubishi. It runs on 17-inch cast aluminum alloy wheels, while the MR uses 17-inch forged aluminum rims. The aggressive appearance also includes smoked front and rear lamp bezels.

The interior is just as race-inspired as the exterior. Driver and passengers sit in Recaro cloth bucket seats with leather accents. The driver turns the vehicle using a dark titanium colour three-spoke steering wheel that is height adjustable. The accelerator, brake and clutch pedals are aluminum on the stock IX and MR models. The Lancer Evolution IX is equipped with a standard 140-watt Mitsubishi audio system with six speakers. The stock model has the option for a 315-watt Mitsubishi/Infinity CD audio system with seven speakers including a subwoofer.

Accessory Packages that are available include an RS package that provides a manual transmission shift knob and kit for boost, voltage and oil pressure gauges. The MR has an accessory package which fits the Evo with an aluminum shift knob, carbon fiber and aluminum brake grip, color-keyed vortex generator, wheel locks and turbo gauge kit.
