INGERSOLL -- The torrent of good news continued at Cami Automotive yesterday as the plant formally launched its new sport utility vehicle

The Pontiac Torrent will be the second vehicle built using the same platform as the hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox.

Next summer, Suzuki Motors, General Motors' partner in the Cami plant, will launch the assembly of a third, still-unnamed SUV at Cami.

"That's the hat trick we have worked so hard to achieve," Cami president Karl Slym told cheering employees at the launch.

GM has invested $550 million in new facilities and production equipment inside the plant, which forced Cami to move the official launch to a tent in the parking lot.

"There's no room inside the plant for an event like this. It's full of equipment . . . that's a great reason to be outside," said Slym.

With the addition of the Torrent, plant production is expected to soar to a record 200,000 vehicles this year.

When the Suzuki vehicle is launched and the Torrent reaches full production, the plant could be turning out 270,000 vehicles a year.

It's a dramatic turnaround from a few years ago, when Cami was only producing 50,000 units of the slow-selling Chevrolet Tracker and Suzuki Vitara SUVs.

The production floor was half-empty and employment had sunk to 1,500, with hundreds of workers on layoff.

The workers were called back with the launch of the Equinox and an extra 600 were hired before the Torrent launch, boosting employment to 2,800.

Kevin Brooke, plant chairperson for Local 88 of the Canadian Auto Workers union, which represents the plant's production staff, said the turnaround has been a relief to union members.

"There's been nothing but bad news for years. Now all this hiring, the spinoff jobs in the community -- it's been fabulous," said Brooke.

Production of the Chevy Equinox has hit 220,000 since it was launched 18 months ago and Slym said sales have outstripped production for the last three months.

Production of the Torrent will begin next week and Brooke says the plant may soon be working overtime to meet demand.

Launch of the Torrent comes only a month after rival Toyota announced it was building a new plant to assemble the RAV-4 SUV about 15 kilometres farther east on Highway 401 near Woodstock.
