High gas prices are not deterring buyers from lining up for a shiny new Hummer H3.

They want a distinctive-looking sport utility vehicle (SUV) and the H3 helps them stand out, says Dan Murray, general manager of Murray Chevrolet Hummer.

Murray has sold 15 H3s since they first arrived in mid-June and has 10 pre-paid owners on a waiting list. Women have bought one-third of the boxy, $39,995 vehicles, he said.

URBAN COUSIN

The urban cousin to the larger H2, is a smaller, 5-cylinder model but still costs $87 to fill up.

"High cigarette prices don't deter people from smoking," said Murray, trying to explain why his SUVs are racking up sales, even without incentives.

"In general, there's a lot of talk about gas prices and vehicles.... It's not changing what people are going to buy yet."

Murray, who is the exclusive Hummer dealer for Manitoba, said if someone wants an SUV they're going to buy one. And, he added, the Hummer is unfairly slammed for being a gas guzzler, when other trucks and SUVs have bigger gas tanks.

"The H3 is pretty fuel-efficient; it generates power in each wheel. It's got great crawling power."

The H2, which starts at $68,900, holds 121 litres of gasoline. There has been no shortage of tire-kickers wanting to test drive the mid-sized truck, known for its off-roading prowess, Murray said.

"It's a challenge to get inventory. I'm waiting for more to come in."

The H3 has won awards for its interior, something that really impresses buyers, Murray added.

"It's got a real look to it. It's more understated than the H2 but it's something that gets noticed."

The typical Hummer buyer is a male in his 30s or younger. Surprisingly, many are abandoning their mini-vans for trucks and when they see the Hummer price, they grab it, Murray said.

"It's a real easy transition to make."

Meanwhile, plans to build a Hummer test track behind his Waverley Street dealership are on hold due to the price of the project. It's still on the drawing board, however, and in the meantime Murray suggests Hummer owners go off-road at the floodway.
